What is International Baccalaureate? • Non-profit educational foundation • Formed in 1968 in Switzerland • Features 3 programs: – Primary years programme (K-5) – Middle years programme (6-10) – Diploma programme (11-12)

What is the Theory of Knowledge course? • A philosophical course that examines the ways of knowing, the ways of acquiring knowledge • Examines strengths and weaknesses of each way of knowing • Interdisciplinary in nature • A sort of capstone course
What is the Creativity, Action, and Service component? • Unexamined portion of Diploma Programme • Emphasize experiential learning • Ideally a half-day per week on CAS • CAS journal • CAS programme should be a reflective process
What is the Extended Essay? • Academic research essay • Maximum of 4,000 words • Students should spend approximately 40 hours • Must be completed outside of course • Students work with supervisor
How are IB assessments scored? • 6 assessments, 7 points possible • 3 additional points possible (TOK and EE) • Total possible points – 45 • Points necessary to earn the IB diploma – 24!! • Academic grace is built into the system. • Both external and internal assessments • Frequent and on-going assessment • All assessments are criterion referenced.
How is the IB Diploma Programme received by colleges and universities? • Senate Bill 111 guarantees 24 credit hours at state schools for all students who earn the IB diploma • Piece-meal credit given at the discretion of the college/university
