Th The His istory of f IB IB and IB IB in in Ontario • The International Baccalaureate was founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 (50 year!) as a non-profit educational foundation • There were 2790 schools in 143 countries writing last May • More than 56% of IB students are women • 369 IB World Schools in Canada: 171 in the Diploma Programme (2016) • First Canadian School in 1974 • IB Diploma Pass Rates: World Average 78% (2018) and our schools typically are greater than the World Average • 155 Universities in Canada recognize the IB Programme (2016) Page 2
IB IB in in th the HWDSB • Two Schools offer the IB Diploma Programme: • Ancaster Secondary School • Westdale Secondary School • Students apply to the IB Program in the designated IB catchment boundary in January of their grade 10 year. Basically: on the mountain; go to Ancaster, not on the mountain: go to Westdale. (Waterdown attends Westdale) • Diploma Program offered in grades 11 and 12 Page 3

Theory of Knowledge – TOK students DO get an OSSD credit for this course. Extended Essay – EE - University prep with a 4000 word essay. What is is specia ial about IB IB assessment? IB assessment is rigorous, criterion related, consistent and differentiating of student ability. • Diploma Programme assessment includes both final examinations and internal assessment undertaken by the teacher using IB criteria and then externally moderated by the IB • Marks awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest) • The maximum diploma score is 45 points including the 3 bonus points • Diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points , complete the Core and get a 4 average in their 3 HL courses Page 12
