  12. Agenda • Introduction to Workforce DTF • Workgroups and products • Ideas for collaboration

  13. Goal of Workforce DTF The translational science workforce has the skills and knowledge necessary to advance translational discoveries. TL1-KL2-Established Investigators and study teams Areas of focus: • Building an environment that supports and values translational science as “the place to go” for those who want to pursue high-impact careers in health sciences. • Training and educating a world-leading, continuously learning workforce. • Developing a translational science workforce that can meet the needs of today and tomorrow.

  14. Structure • Lead Team members 2019 • Susan Smyth, MD PhD - Steering Committee Co-Chair • Rebecca Jackson, MD - Co-Chair • Lead Team members • Jason Umans, MD - George Washington Univ. • Susan Pusek, MPH, MS - U. North Carolina • Cynthia Morris, MD - Oregon Health Sciences Univ. • Joan Nagel, MDMPH - NCATS • KL2 PIs/Directors Group • TL1 PIs/Directors Group

  15. Workgroups and Products #1 • Best Practices for Mentoring and Supporting TL1 and KL2 Trainees • Developed a survey focusing on factors that influence outcomes of KL2 and TL1 trainees: • Institution • KL2 or TL1 program characteristics • Individual Scholar factors • Survey disseminated to KL2 and TL1 Directors • Initial KL2 results presented at March face to face meeting in Washington, DC • Paper for KL2 under review • TL1 survey still open- goal is to share results at Fall CTSA meeting

  16. Workgroups and Products #2a • Clinical Research Training for Investigators • Explore feasibility of on-line learning environment to build investigator knowledge of operational and logistical skills in protocol development and implementation • Formal meetings completed • Manuscript in preparation • Static version of product will be put on CLIC Website • Working with vendor to finish interactive version

  17. Workgroups and Products #2b

  18. Workgroups and Products #3a • Federated Education Platform: Harmonizing Competencies • Survey to identify how educators prioritize training in the 97 CTSA Core Competencies based on career phenotype • Respondents identified which level of mastery they felt was appropriate: • Exposure: Introduction to the competency and meaningful/relevant vocabulary • Application: More substantial skills training used to initiate and implement a specific research endeavor within a mentored experience or ultimately with collaborators • Integration: In-depth training with a goal for the learner to become independent in using the skills in their own research • N/A: Training is not required for this phenotype

  19. Workgroups and Products #3b • Federated Education Platform: Harmonizing Competencies • Phenotypes: Preclinical, Clinical, Community Engaged, Dissemination/Implementation, Public Health, Data Science/Analytics • Analysis focused on Preclinical, Clinical, Community Engaged • Paper submitted

  20. Workgroups and Products #4 (new) • Measures of Impact • Identify effective and feasible measures for assessing the impact of workforce development initiatives that extend beyond measuring publications, academic appointments and grantsmanship • Possible other measures of impact • Mentoring, Team science, Diversity, Career Sustainability, Translational Pipeline, Individual Characteristics, Research Impact • Deliverable: Shared set of metrics for CTSA hubs with future goal to validate.

  21. Ideas for Collaboration • What are foundational knowledge, skills and abilities for researchers working across the lifespan? • Develop training in each category of mastery • Begins to inform Individual Development Plans and career development plans • Collaboration with KL2 Programs: dissemination of training material and tools, identify gaps • Highlight mentoring expertise in lifespan areas to explore formal relationships and/or consults

  27. Early Life Exposure (ELE) WG Update • Friday, July 26 th - Rita Hamad (University of California, San Francisco) and Gretchen Bandoli (University of California, San Diego) will be presenting. • Friday, September 27 th - Mamta Fuloria (Albert Einstein College of Medicine) and Heidi Hanson (University of Utah) will be the presenting. • We are working on an option to make the presentations available to a broader audience. ‒ CLIC has cut and posted them on the ELE WG page and they can be accessed by ELE WG members. ‒ We do not currently have consent forms for the presentations and can’t make them widely available at this time. ‒ Shari recommended giving presenters the option of posting through our Lifespan Enterprise Committee, the CLIC website to connect to other CTSI’s, or preference for not posting. We will collect this information from past and future presenters.
