  1. In the Maranoa we are committed to improving our local environment for the enjoyment of residents and visitors for years to come. Maranoa Regional Council and the community work tirelessly to ensure all towns in the Maranoa continue to stay clean and healthy.

  2. Maranoa Regional Council Initiatives Heritage and Culture • Roma’s young legend Lane Brookes • Roma Community Arts Centre • Heroes ’ Avenue • Adungadoo Pathway, Yarning Circle and China Town Interpretive Display • Roma Cenotaph Upgrade • Animating Spaces

  3. Water Waste Management • • Water Saving Education Roma Sewerage Treatment Plant • • Roma Sewerage Augmentation Project Asbestos Awareness Month • Drop Zone 2013 • 15kgs mobile phones Community • 10,483 chemical drums • Keep Maranoa Beautiful Program (an initiative 20,000m 3 green waste • to encourage residents to do their bit) • • Litter – (encouraging residents to pick up and 50,000 tonnes concrete crushing • report littler) Almost 1,000 tonnes scrap steel • • Australia Day 28.52 tonnes lead acid batteries • Anzac Day • 20,000L of waste motor oil transported offsite for recycling • Continued support and facilitation of major events – (Maranoa Food & Fire Festival) • A new and improved community website • Be Healthy and Safe Maranoa

  4. Sewerage Treatment Plant The treatment plant has recently undergone a major upgrade as a part of the Roma Sewerage Augmentation Project. With a growing population and pressure on Roma’s sewer networks, the need for upgrading a number of systems across the region was identified in Council’s 2013/14 Budget. The Roma Sewerage Augmentation Project has seen essential underground assets receive a much-needed overhaul. • Construction of new sludge drying beds • Interconnecting pipework • Desludging and relining ponds • Construction of largest rock filter in Queensland • Addition of six new holding tanks

  5. About the Project The Roma Sewerage Augmentation Project is a $5 million upgrade of Roma’s underground sewerage infrastructure, including the replacement of key sewer mains as well as the construction of two new pump stations. Thanks to Council funding, along with major contributions from the State Government (through Royalties for the Regions), Australia Pacific LNG and Santos GLNG, this project has seen major upgrades to Roma’s sewer infrastructure underground, allowing for future continued growth and longevity of sustainable assets.

  6. The project was divided into a number of different stages to ensure minimal disruption to residents. Stage 1: 1.5kms of 375mm & 300mm gravity sewer main. Stage 2: 1.2kms of 300mm gravity sewer main. Stage 3: 1km of 525mm gravity sewer main. Stage 4A: A new Sewerage Pump Station was constructed and is now connected by 800m of 100mm pressure sewer main. Stage 4B: A new Sewerage Pump Station was constructed and is now connected by 2kms of 450mm pressure sewer mains to the Roma Sewerage Treatment Plant. The pump station has also been connected with 200m of 375mm inlet gravity sewer main.

  7. Additional Upgrade Works In addition to the major works, several minor projects were completed, including, Roma STP lagoon de-sludging and sewer main relining. • Truck Waste Receival Area • Roma STP Upgrade Stage 1 (Lagoons 1, 2, 3, 4 and pipe network upgrade) • Roma STP Upgrade Stage 2 (Lagoons 5 and 6 upgrade) • Roma STP Upgrade Stage 3 (Installation of Effluent Polishing Facility and Lagoon Upgrade) Sludge Drying Bed upgrade • Roma STP 20 Year Plan • Platform Replacement Imhoff Tanks • Roma STP Flow meters • IEMS (Integrated Environmental Management System) Roma STP • Stormwater Management Plan

  8. Future Maintenance Just like wear and tear on a road, as many of the town’s sewerage mains reached the end of their life, a large scale upgrade was needed to ensure they were replaced using infrastructure that can better handle the network’s high load. Maranoa Regional Council will maintain the new infrastructure into the future. The new assets have an estimated 100 year life span , resulting in a highly sustainable asset which will require minimal maintenance to ensure its benefit to the community is maximised. The Roma Sewerage Augmentation Project supports sustainable economic growth through the investment in key services and facilities. The project was funded with contributions from State Government, Australia Pacific LNG, Santos GLNG and Maranoa Regional Council. Council recognises these contributions in providing essential infrastructure that will facilitate affordable housing initiatives in the Maranoa. COUNCIL LIMITED IMPACT SUSTAINABLE MAINTAINED ON ENVIRONMENT COST-EFFECTIVE

  9. New Sludge Drying Beds A sludge drying bed is… A sludge drying bed is a method used to dewater sludge through filtration and evaporation. Through pipes at the bottom of the bed, the sludge is drained of excess water. This loses its moisture content and begins to dry. This system is used to treat incoming sludge that is being transported from other areas of the treatment plant. The end result is a dry mass that can be used as fertilizer for crop harvesting, dressing golf fairways, soil conditioner and the like. About The sludge drying beds at the Roma Sewage Treatment Plant received an overhaul as part of a $600,000 upgrade. New drying beds were constructed to enable appropriate capacity for the town’s continuing growth. Six larger drying beds were constructed with capacity for a sewerage load of 12,000 EP (equivalent persons), this was a large upgrade from the six smaller sized drying beds that were originally in operation. The project was funded by the State Government under the Royalties for Regions program and Maranoa Regional Council.

  10. Six New Holding Tanks & Sludge Removal Lagoons 1, 2, 3, 4 and pipe network upgrade Funded from revenue received from regulated trucked waste. This project included sludge removal, two lagoons deepened with a new liner installed. Lagoons 5 and 6 upgrade The Roma Sewerage Treatment Plant Augmentation is a joint initiative of Maranoa Regional Council and the Queensland Government. Stage 2 enabled further sludge removal and lagoon maintenance in two lagoons. After cleaning and maintenance was been completed, lagoon baffles were installed and concrete inlet and outlet structures constructed. One of the best bird watching spots in Roma!

  11. Funding Partners This project was funded under the Royalties for the Regions program and totalled $4.988M. Key funding contributions came from State Government ($2,180,260), Australia Pacific LNG ($1,500,000) Santos GLNG ($1,000,000) and Maranoa Regional Council ($307,740).
