• Ministry of Environment is the National Focal Point of CBD for Sri Lanka. • Signed and ratified the CBD in 1994. • Prepared the National Biodiversity Conservation Action plan(NBCAP) on 1998 • Prepared the Addendum to the NBCAP on 2007
• Sri Lanka has included conservation of biodiversity in the Action plan of the Ministry “ Haritha Lanka”. • Sri Lanka has incorporated conservation of biodiversity in the Government mission “ Mahinda chinthanaya ” the vision for tomorrow. • Conducted an assessment of the status of Biodiversity of the Country (Aichi Target 12).
Assessment of Biodiversity of the Country • Preparation of National Red List 2007 • Preparation of National Red List 2012 • Includes way forward for conservation of threatened species with implementing agencies and time frame.
Foreign funded projects • In-situ conservation of Crop Wild Relatives. • Strengthening capacity to control the introduction and spread of Invasive Alien Species in Sri Lanka(Aichi Target 9) • Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable use for Improved Human Nutrition and Well being. • Mainstreaming Agro-biodiversity Conservation and use in Sri Lanka Agro Ecosystem for Livelihood and Adaptation to Climate Change(Aichi Target 14).
Local funded projects • Species conservation and Biodiversity Hot-spot survey program for sustainable development (Aichi Target 11) • National and Global Assessment of Fauna and Flora of Sri Lanka (National Red List 2016 ) – Implementing way forward. – Conducting awareness programs for Government officers, University community, General public etc. (Aichi Target 1). – Providing financial assistance for the research on least studied groups and ecosystems.

Provincial biodiversity Profiles and Action Plans • Prepared by experts in the province with participation of provincial council, other regional agencies and local community. • Includes detail overview of biodiversity of the area. • Threats to the biodiversity. • Actions should be taken for the conservation of biodiversity of the area with time frame and implementation agencies.
Provincial Biodiversity Profile includes • Bio-geographical aspects • Ecosystem profile(major ecosystems) • Species profiles (flora & fauna, micro organisms) • Genetic profile • In-situ and Ex-situ conservation facilities in the province • Cultural and other related diversity • Impacts on biodiversity • Biodiversity related institutional aspects • Biodiversity related policy and legal aspects • Bio industry and bio prospecting • Action Plan and Institutional arrangements for implementation of the action plan for the province
Implementation of provincial biodiversity action plans • Funded by Government Consolidated funds. • Implementation by Provincial Authority. • Biodiversity secretariat of the Ministry of Environment is providing financial assistance for implementation of prioritized activities of the action plan. • Conducting training, awareness and capacity building programs to provincial authorities on biodiversity conservation.
