PROBLEMS ADDRESSED • Wind and solar are intermittent, ephemeral • 24hr electricity, off-grid, stand alone or in micro-grids, requires battery storage systems, which in turn require diesel generator back-up. • Demand always exceeds supply in micro-grids and demand support also requires mechanical generation – diesel or petrol generators. • 9 to 11 million small diesel generators are sold p.a. , many employed simply to charge battery packs. • Buying diesel drains hard currency from communities • Megatonnes of agriculture and forestry waste produced every year that could be used as fuel, much waste already burnt in open piles or left to rot - no simple way to convert variable and seasonal biomass fuels to power at small scale, at points of micro-grid demand.
