What is the need for the region? Current state • Health Outcomes ‒ Fresno County ranks 52 out of 58 counties in health outcomes ‒ Pre-term birthrate one of the highest in the country ‒ Disproportionate incidence of diabetes, asthma and obesity ‒ One of the highest rates of congenital syphilis in the country • Poor access to healthcare ‒ Total number of primary care physicians (45 per 100,000 population) compared with 57 statewide and recommended 60-80 per 100,000 ‒ Poor demographic match (6% of physicians in the state are Latino while 40% of the population is Latino) 10/8/2019 How do we prepare and train physicians for the region? 10/8/2019 2 9/10/2019 UCSF Fresno Mini Med School 2019

Steps to a Physician: UCSF Fresno College/University (4 years plus) • Work with Fresno State on Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) • Work with UC Merced on Pre-med advising • Host the Reaching Out to Aspiring Doctors (ROAD) Conference • Assist in developing post-bac programs to strengthen applications 10/8/2019 Steps to a Physician: UCSF Fresno Medical School (4 years) • Starting with the class of 2023 (started July 2019)- San Joaquin Program in Medical Education • Started with 6 students in 2019 going to 12 students per year in 2020 • Targeted recruiting students from the Central Valley, from historically under-represented minorities in medicine, and who express an interest in practicing in the Central Valley • As we identify funding, will expand to 50 students per year 10/8/2019 4 9/10/2019 UCSF Fresno Mini Med School 2019

Steps to a Physician: UCSF Fresno Specialty and subspecialty training (3-7 years) • Physicians cannot practice in California until they have completed at least 3 years of residency • Residency is the first phase of graduate medical education • UCSF Fresno has seven residencies with 280 residents • All of them spend the majority of their time in the Valley learning to provide healthcare under the oversight of faculty in Fresno 10/8/2019 Steps to a Physician: UCSF Fresno Specialty and subspecialty training (3-7 years) • After residency, some physicians will opt to do additional subspecialty training (eg.
