Variables and data used HELCOM Map and Data service (http://maps.helcom.fi/website/mapservice/index.html) Seabed sediments – photic hard bottom Benthic biotope complexes in the Baltic Sea, based on a combination of geological sediment data (BALANCE) and light availability data (DHI/EuSeaMap). Fucus sp. distribution HELCOM HOLAS II Dataset: Fucus distribution (2018). Furcellaria lumbricalis distribution HELCOM HOLAS II Dataset: Furcellaria lumbricalis distribution (2018). Zostera marina distribution HELCOM HOLAS II Dataset: Zostera marina distribution (2018). Charophyte distribution Distribution of Charophytes (Chara spp., Nitella spp., Nitellopsis spp., Tolypella spp.). HELCOM HOLAS II Dataset: Charophyte distribution (2018). www.panbalticscope.eu 3
Initial feedback from experts Finland waters : The overall map is a pretty good match with the VELMU predictive map describing the distribution and abundance of Baltic herring yolk-sac larvae. In some areas is overestimates, and in some under-estimates. Lithuanian waters : There is no herring spawning in the Curonian lagoon. Russian waters: Herring spawning areas are apparently absent in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland (Neva Inlet, figures provided). www.panbalticscope.eu 4
Proposed way forward Use the map on recruitment areas of herring as presented in document 2, after the adjustments proposed to Lithuanian and Russian waters www.panbalticscope.eu 5
