  3. What is HB 5?  HB5 was designed to instill more flexibility in public education by enabling students to either pursue a traditional path into colleges and universities or move directly into the workforce to help fill what business leaders say is a critical skills shortage.

English: 4 credits  Math: 4 credits (Algebra II required)  Science: 4 credits (Chemistry or Physics required)  Social Studies: 4 credits  Language other than English: 2 credits  PE: 1 credit  Fine Arts: 1 credit  Speech: 0.5 credit  Technology: 1 credit  Electives: 4.5 credits  Total: 26 credits ( 4 of the 26 required credits must be in a  coherent sequence and content- specific to the student’s Endorsement Area)

  5. Good to know….  A student must graduate with a Distinguished Level of Achievement and be in the top 10% of their class to be eligible for automatic admission to a Texas public college or university.

Pe Performance ormance Ackn knowledgement wledgements  A student may earn a performance acknowledgement in one or more of the following categories:  For outstanding performance: ○ In a dual credit course (at least 12 hours with a 3.0 or higher) ○ In bilingualism and biliteracy ○ On an AP test (3 or higher) ○ On the PSAT (commended or higher), SAT (1250 – CR & Math only), or the ACT (28) ○ Earning a nationally or internationally recognized business or industry certification.

  8. What is an Endorsement?  Students will be able to earn one or more endorsements as part of their graduation requirements. Endorsements consist of a related series of courses that are grouped together by interest or skill set. They provide students with in- depth knowledge of a subject area. Students earn an endorsement by completing the curriculum requirements for the endorsement, including 4th credit of math and science and 2 additional elective credits.  Choosing an endorsement is like choosing a college major.

Endo En dorse semen ents ts  A student may earn an  5 endorsement areas: endorsement by  Arts & Humanities successfully completing:  Business & Industry  Curriculum requirements for the  Public Services endorsement  STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)  Multidisciplinary (assigned by counselor only)

  11. What is a Pathway?  A focused sequence of courses that leads to an endorsement and/or certification.  Once your child chooses their endorsement, they will then decide the specific pathway they want to navigate.

  12. What is Career Cruising?  Career Cruising is an Internet-based career exploration and planning tool used by your son or daughter to explore career and college options and develop a career plan. Career Cruising can be accessed from school, from home, or wherever your son or daughter has access to the Internet.

  13. Timeline: 8 th grade Monday, Oct 30 th & Tuesday Oct 31 st – • Plan Your Path field trip permission slips distributed. Due back Nov 3 rd Wednesday, Nov. 15th – • 8th grade Plan Your Path field trip to JHS/NGC. Students receive Endorsement selection sheets Thursday, November 16 th DUE back Friday, November 17 th

Timeline: 8 th grade  Monday, November 27th (NMS) Tuesday, November 28 th (LMS) 9th grade counselors meet in the library to discuss course selection sheets.  December 8th – All 9th grade course selections finalized in Career Cruising with Careers teacher.  January – 9th grade counselors assist in verifying 4-year plan Endorsement pathways in Career Cruising Educate students on how extra-curricular activities impact scheduling and course choices.

Timeline: 8 th grade  January – 9th grade counselors assist in verifying 4-year plan CORE class selections in Career Cruising Educate students on AP/Dual credit  February – 9th grade counselors assist in verifying 4-year plan JISD required classes in Career Cruising 9 th grade course selections will be locked in Career Cruising

  16. 8 th grade timeline goals:  Increases interaction time between 8 th graders and 9 th grade counselors.  Increases knowledge of Endorsements and 4-year plan for students.  Students enter 9 th grade with a correctly developed 4-year plan.  Parents will be sent their student’s 4 -year plan in May to review, meet with counselors if needed, and approve.
