H Street Current Plans Plans at that have been prepared at this time are to • replace the street as it exists today
Alternative H Street Cross-Section
Street Trees Parkway The recommended Parkway width for • Street Trees is 8’ When the planting strip between the • street and sidewalk is less than eight feet wide, tree health, vigor, and life span will be reduced.
Street Trees Life span In Salida a shade tree species may • become a potential hazard in as little as 30 years Street Tree replacement should be • staggered to avoid the complete loss of the canopy The current 4.5’ parkways are not • appropriate for larger shade trees
Street Trees Benefits The USDA Forest Service evaluated the benefits of community forests. For each dollar that a city invests in a community tree program, large trees return $1.92 in environmental benefits. Medium-size trees return $1.36, while small trees return $1.00. • Property values • Energy saving from heating and cooling • Noise abatement • Carbon dioxide reduction • Air-pollution abatement • Hydrology (stormwater runoff)
Wider Parkway for Street Trees • The Tree Board could recommend larger shade trees species as an alternative to smaller ornamental trees species for the replacement of street trees loss during the project • Property owners wishing to replace their street trees can fill out the Adopt-a-Tree form that has been handed out
Pavement Width • Currently pavement width is 34’ with an additional 4’ with curb and gutter • Meaning there is a Min. Drive lane of 11.5’ on H Street with a parked car
Speeds and Accidents Abbreviated Injury Severity
Recommended Drive Lanes Widths
Widths of Vehicles • Compact – 5.5 ft to 5.9 ft • Mid Sized – 5.8 ft to 6.0 ft • Trucks – 6.0 ft to 6.6 ft • Fire Truck – 8.36 ft
Cost Savings per Block • The estimated cost saving by reducing the pavement by 3’ is $1,900 per block or $26,600 for over the 14 blocks of H Street
H Street Decision • Widening the Parkway would not prohibit local truck traffic • Not Hinder Emergency Vehicles • Wider Parkways would allow for larger trees
