There was no drain on the floor of the shower because the water ran out under the walls and evaporated quickly in the sun. 2. To stop his mother worrying about him, Stanley doesn't tell the truth about the camp. He doesn't say that they have been digging holes but that they have been out on the lake all day. 3. Stanley is surprised that the Warden knows his name. 4. The author uses the word ‘piercing’ to express the way Stanley is digging. He is frustrated and cannot figure out why X-Ray has snapped at him. 8

Stanley thinks it’s a good idea because Stanley is the leader of the group and he doesn't want to get on his wrong side. 2. Stanley guesses he had lost five pounds because he has been digging Holes. 3. X-Ray tells him to get behind Magnet and in front of Zero in the line when the water truck comes. 9

The author uses the word ‘sprawled’ to describe how the tired boys are sitting down. 2. They give him the nickname 'Caveman', they talk to him about his first day and they invite him to have dinner with them. Challenge: 1. Suggested answer- The Warden wants to find something to do with whoever etched KB onto the gold tube. I know this because in chapter 14, she rewards X-Ray, who she thinks has found the gold tube, by giving him the day off, clean clothes and a double shower. She also fills the other boys' canteens with water. 10
