  1. Overview of the Green Gas Certification Scheme Ciaran Burns 17 November 2016

  2. GGCS outline • GGCS tracks commercial transactions of grid injected biomethane through the supply chain • Each unit of green gas injected into the grid displaces the need for a unit of conventional gas • Unique identifiers ensure there is no double-counting or double-selling of green gas • Certificates are valid for 3 years from the injection date, at which point they are retired out of the system

  3. GGCS process at a glance

  4. Information • Date of creation • Customer name • Range of RGGOs • Injection Date • Technology/feedstock • Country of injection • Total amount kWh • Producer • Supplier • Pin Code • CO2 figure associated with LCA – more later

  5. Validate certificates http://www.greengas.org.uk/certificates/validate

  6. Who are the suppliers? http://www.greengas.org.uk/certificates/for-sale

  7. Current scheme status • 26 producers registered • Capacity of producers 1.3 TWh per annum • 22 suppliers registered • Over 960 million kWh registered on the scheme since 2012 • 265 million kWh certificates sold • 700 million kWh unsold (700 GWh)

  8. Total volume of units registered and number of producers registered 500 450 13 400 10 350 300 Volume of certificates registered 250 (GWh) 200 150 4 100 50 0 Biogas from food Biogas from waste Biogas from waste water treatment agricultural activities

  9. Number of members registered and the volmes of gas registered between 2012 and 2016 500 30 Gas from 450 agricultural 25 400 26 activities Millions of KWh (or GWh) 350 Gas from waste 20 water 300 15 treatment 250 15 Gas from food 200 waste 10 150 8 100 Number of 5 50 plants 2 1 0 0 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 • Large volumes of the gas injected for 2016 not yet registered • 2015 figures still increasing • Waste water and food waste plants are larger but take longer to develop

  10. Volume of certificates sold and number of suppliers on the scheme 160 25 140 22 20 Volume of gas 120 sold 100 15 GWh 80 Number of 12 Suppliers 11 10 60 6 40 Number of 5 suppliers that 3 20 have sold 2 certificates 1 1 0 0 2013 2014 2015 2016 • As it’s a new product several suppliers not yet active. • Current energy supplier might already be a member

  11. GGCS successes to date • Low Carbon Emission Bus – Green Gas Certificates (GGCs) proof of biomethane use – providing access to BSOG subsidy • Recognition of Green Gas certificates under the GHG Protocol – more later! • Defra GHG reporting – Inclusion of GGCs as reporting tool… – …Defra sitting on conclusion for 3 years now • Explored use of GGCs as part of Zero Carbon Homes policy – But Chancellor scrapped Government ambition on this in July 2015

  12. Volume of certificates sold to each market sector each year 140 4 0 120 100 59 4 Transport 80 Volume of 20 Buses certificates (GWh) 60 Corporate 37 Energy Suppliers 40 69 2 20 20 31 1 1 5 6 1 0 0 2013 2014 2015 2016 • Buses paid 6p/km for using biomethane (BSOG). Settlement at end of year. • 5 green energy suppliers now members in 2016 • Commercial suppliers now offering green tariffs

  13. CO 2 emission figure • Biomass fuel used by RHI participants must meet a lifecycle GHG emissions target of 34.8g CO2 eq/MJ of heat; • Since all biomethane on the GGCS has received the RHI then it is possible to say that all units of biomethane have emitted no more than 34.8g CO2 eq/MJ • 125.28g CO2 eq/kWh • These are Scope 3 emissions – More later from Syed, Sacha and Sarah!!!

  14. Looking Forward • GGCs as a reporting tool in GHG Protocol – International standards on how organisations should report the GHG emissions associated with their operations. • Guarantees of Origin for Biopropane (BioLPG) with Calor Gas • London Zero Carbon Homes policy – ZCH standard to be introduced in London 1 October 2016 – already developer interest in green gas – One major development already committed to use of green gas certificates • Use of green gas/green gas certificates in transport sector – Considered in detail in REA ‘ Use of gaseous fuels in transport ’ REA report – Forthcoming RTFO will consider potential of grid-injected biomethane
