Gravesham BC Environmental Services Committee Monday 19 March 2018 Paldeep Bhatti Kent Resource Partnership Manager
Why does the Partnership exist? However, the Kent Resource Partnership has established for itself: - • Joint work on reducing costs is mutually essential. • We protect our interests e.g. legal, money, performance, taxpayers. • We maximise our ‘clout’ with private sector and government. • External funding is scarce – increase our chances together. • Are there really any better alternatives to managing costs/performance?
How is the KRP effecting change? • Joint working between Kent councils – East and Mid Kent Project: Efficiencies + Improved Performance • Approx. £10 million in external funds into services & communications – £1 million from WRAP and private sector bodies – £8.8 million from DCLG • Substantial ‘clout’ with government and supply chain – ‘At the negotiating table’ on behalf of local gov’t (e.g. formation of Regulations). – Ministerial attention and support for Kent initiatives • KRP colleagues influencing national agenda – Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP) – Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) – National Association of Waste Disposal Organisations (NAWDO) – WRAP: Courtauld 2025, Food Waste, Communications, Plastics, Electricals, Textiles – Resource Association – Chartered Institution of Wastes Management urce: Dr Jane Beasley, independent review report into the KRP, February 2015
Annual Report 2016/17 • Over 731,000 tonnes of household waste handled in Kent:- – Just over 46% sent for recycling & composting; – Just under 51% sent to generate energy; and – Just under 3% sent to landfill. • The total cost of waste resource management across the 13 Kent councils was just under £98 million. – Average cost of £155 per household per year – Average of just £2.99 a week per household – Another £16 million invested in keeping Kent clean. • Full details of the Annual Report can be found here.
