  1. Grade 12s 12 Things You Need to Know!

  2. 1. How I Can Help  Support with:  Choosing a post-secondary program / career  Understanding admission requirements  Navigating the post-secondary application process  Communicating with post-secondary schools as needed / being the counsellor contact noted on post-secondary applications (if required)  Setting up / navigating myblueprint and myPass…more on these later!  Scholarship applications

  3. 2. How To Reach Me!  My office is in the library: stop by!  Email me at msande@redeemer.ab.ca  Use the sign- up sheet near the “Free Books” box in the library  Also, check our school website’s “Announcement” and “Post - Secondary” sections regularly for post-secondary information

  4. 3. Do post-secondary applications early!  Some post-secondary applications open in September – e.g. U of L, U of T , UBC  Many applications open in October, e.g. U of C, MRU, U of A, SAIT , etc.  For most schools, make sure that you have a first choice and second choice program selected as you can apply to two programs at many schools:  It’s ideal if your second choice program is less competitive than your first choice

  5. 4. Apply early even if your Grade 11 marks were not your best work!  There are no disadvantages to applying early  Advantages are:  Gives post-secondary schools more chances to consider you  Gets the communication process started / gives schools a chance to flag any missing courses  Ensures that you can apply for school-specific scholarships before the deadlines  If a school is not able to offer you early admission, they will typically reconsider you for regular admission

  6. 5. Having trouble deciding on a program? Use myblueprint and ALIS to help!

  7. 6. Apply for School-Specific Scholarships Right Away!  As soon as you apply to a post-secondary school, apply for scholarships at that school:  You don’t need to wait on an admission decision to apply for scholarships!  Deadlines for school specific scholarships vary, but can be as early as November and December!

  8. 7. Have a Plan A and Plan B  Apply to multiple post-secondary schools / programs  See which school gives you the best offer  Have choices available in case you change your mind!

  9. 8. Get your myPass Account set up!  View diploma exam grades  For in-province post-secondary applications:  Check your transcript when entering courses and grades  For out of province post-secondary applications:  You require myPass to send these schools your transcript

  10. 9. Make sure you’ve done all steps for your myPass account  Providing an email is only the first step for myPass set up  Stop by my office so I can help you to complete the final steps  If you have never seen / are not currently able to log-in to an account that looks like the one below, you still have additional steps to complete.

  11. 10. Be familiar with ApplyAlberta.ca  Most Albertan post-secondary schools will direct you to use this website at some point during the application process  Always start at the post-secondary school website first and let them re-direct you to ApplyAlberta  This website allows Albertan post-secondary schools to view your transcript

  12. 11. Read Carefully!  Check your email, mail, and post-secondary school accounts regularly  Read all communication from post-secondary schools carefully to keep track of:  Deadlines  Options available to you  What post-secondary schools need from you, e.g. transcripts, updated grades, deposits, etc.

  13. 12. Just for Fun… Statistics About Our 2019 Graduates  For post-secondary school choices:  Approximately half of our students chose to study in Calgary  Approximately two-thirds of our students stayed within Alberta  For the one-third studying out of province, BC and Ontario were the most frequently chosen destinations  The most popular schools chosen were SAIT , MRU, and U of C  The most frequently chosen programs were Bachelor degrees, followed by Diplomas and Trades
