  4. Preparation Technology Integrator, Technology Supervisor research, investigation, visits, preparation Vanguard planning sessions Teacher cohorts, summer training Teachers utilizing app request process LMS Study -- decision to be made by May PETE & C Apple Training, Workshops 4

  5. Brief background iPads purchased for all HS teachers Fall 2011 Cohorts created for teachers to learn to use iPads iPad pilot 2012-13 with two groups of students Currently three carts of iPads for student use Ongoing professional development for teachers 5

  6. Our Vision Each high school student to have a device for use at school and home (aka “1:1”) Device to connect to available Wifi for Internet access School “filtering” to apply at home Used in class, at home for homework Texts and other books housed on the iPad when possible Teachers deliver content and can receive student work via device 6

  7. Why 1:1? Computer lab model expensive and inefficient Personal device allows for ubiquitous use Students learn to use the device for work as a productivity tool Personal device fosters “ownership” of the device, hence better care of the device Students exposed to 21st Century Skills 7

  8. The Device Full-sized iPad More screen “real estate” for reading, apps CDT, Keystone Exams 32 GB memory for eBooks, audio/video, etc. Protective case 8

  9. MDM Mobile Device Management Students will create a school-specific Apple ID for use with the school iPad GM App Store -- teachers can have apps added for students to download, use at teacher request Internet filter at school Internet filtering at home is industry standard but not as restrictive as at school Lost or stolen devices may be found through MDM No remote access to devices by District (camera, microphone, etc.) 9

  10. Benefits Reduction in textbook purchases Reduction in paper Time savings Immediate access to resources (dictionary, calculator, research resources) Greater student engagement Teachers take ownership of curriculum through the process of finding/developing materials Students learn value in use of digital device as a productivity tool 10

  11. Student Training Students will learn . . . about the district’s AUP and to abide by it good digital citizenship consequences of cyber bullying consequences of posting inappropriate comments, photos, etc. online 11

  12. What if . . . ? What if my son/daughter loses his/her iPad? What if my son/daughter’s iPad is stolen? What if my son/daughter’s iPad is damaged? What if my son/daughter’s iPad isn’t charged at the start of the school day? What if my son/daughter forgets to bring the iPad to school? 12

  13. Issues . . . We don’t have Internet access in our home. How will my son/daughter be able to use the iPad at home? I really don’t want my son/daughter to have an online device in his/her room. Does he/she have to bring it home? What will happen if my son/daughter uses the iPad inappropriately or breaks a school rule with it? What happens to the iPad at the end of the school year? at the end of his/her high school career? 13

  14. Privacy Issues No right to privacy with iPads Administration and teachers reserve the right to look at content of the school-owned device at any time Students will not be permitted to take them into locker rooms Students will be instructed to leave them in locked lockers during phys ed 14

  15. Going Forward Project information on GMHS website http://www.generalmclane.net/schools/general-mclane- high-school/high-school-11-project Rollout meetings to include students (under 18) and parents Rollout by grade level in August iPad “user” trainings for students appropriate use 15
