General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Overview: • Approved by EU Parliament on April 14, 2016; takes place of previous directives on data privacy • Goes into effect May 25, 2018 • Meant to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe | protect data privacy of EU citizens | reshape organizations’ approach to data privacy • Applies to all companies (regardless of location) processing and holding personal data of people in the EU • Noncompliance can mean a fine of up to 4% of annual global turnover
