From Doctor to Docent a Personal Reflection Jonny Johansson
About this presentation • My path to the docentship – a 7 year journey • All but a straight line • Memory is selective • Hindsight view on events, people, and work that have been important in achieving the the docentship • Timeline is the base – End of 2004 until today • A mix of research and other activities – More or less connected to actually becoming a Docent

The end is the beginning • Thesis defence Nov. 25, 2004 • Agreement to continue • Enourmous feeling of relief • Planning for docentship? - nope... • Money? - Not my problem.... • A little bit naive? - Yes.... • Papers? – 2 journals, 6 conferences
What was in the thesis? • Quite diverse • Ultrasonics – Modelling in Spice togeher with electronics • ASIC design – US driver and receive chip – A/D converter • System design – ASIC mounted on US device – The Mulle Embedded platform

The continuation… • 2005 quite vague • Employed as Foass • Teaching, attempting research – Unfocused on reasearch, teaching my foundation • No solid plan which path to take research wise – Idea to work with electronics for ultrasonics • In hindsight, three major events: – Assistant supervisor for Kirill Kozmin – Eiscat 3D project initiated - Gustav Johansson employed – Strategic money from EISLAB - Johan Borg to work with the thumb size ultrasonic transducer • All of these thanks to the driving force of Prof. Jerker Delsing

Teaching • Obviously, in the University, a core activity – Development and teaching of courses – In my case, basic and advanced electronics • The students are our future (”plattityd”, men sant) – Meeting and interacting with the students give me energy – Facilitating learning is the key • Mutual appreciation – Adelie price 2004, Studentkårens pris 2009 • Does count in the CV – Keep documentation and course evaluations!

The level crossing A/D converter • The signal is sampled at the moments when it crosses threshold level • The time intervals between samples is measured • High SNR with few comparators • Activity dependent power consumption • No aliasing • Two critical components – Comparator & Timer
Contributions to the area • System analysis – Structured design approach, considering multiple effects – Comparator: – Propagation delay stability, Offset, Input related noise,Output jitter – Timer: – Resolution, Linearity, Jitter • Comparator optimization – Minimize delay variations – Increase preamplifier bandwidth – Redistribute gain and bandwidth between preamplifier gain stages – Neutralization capacitors
Important journal publications • First efforts at well ranked Journals – Valuable input from Prof. Juha Kostamovaara: ”- Tell them what you are going to say, say it, then tell them what you told them” • Level-crossing ADC performance evaluation toward ultrasound application. – Kozmin, Kirill ; Johansson, Jonny ; Delsing, Jerker. I: IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems Part 1: Regular Papers. 2009 • A low propagation delay dispersion comparator for a level- crossing AD converter. – Kozmin, Kirill ; Johansson, Jonny ; Kostamovaara, Juha. I: Analog Integrated Circuits and Signal Processing. 2010

Widening responsibilities • Great experience or administrative boredom? – Depends on who you ask – Learning and understanding the system (avoiding the ”we” vs ”them” effect…) – Part of an academic career • Setting up the Y program – Teknisk fysik och elektroteknik - merging two programs – Negotiations over department limits – Making new friends (and not so good friends) – Great insight in educational planning, maze of restrictions
Leadership matters... • Assisting EISLAB head of division – Working close to Jan van Deventer – Handling of staff matters, development talks, planning etc • Utbildningsledare (UL, HUL) – Deep understanding of the system in educational matters – Good connections to the ”B house” – Everything from unhappy students to strategic planning • Utbildningskoordinator (UK) – Brief sejour working for TFN – Insight in TFN matters

Eiscat 3D – the next generation incoherent scatter radar • Tool for atmospheric research – Electrons, ions, plasma • Multi-static in the polar region • Huge arrays with direct sampling receivers • LTU responsibilities – Receiver front end – Timing – Beam forming • Stringent timing demands – 100 – 150 ps
Contributions to Eiscat 3D • Digital beamforming – Simulation tool – Requirements and filter design • Timing – GNSS based system proposed • Practical tests performed – Cable based calibration system • Signal injection at each front end • Sub 20 ps accuracy • Amplitude measurement 0,08% – Error detection using PCA • Major efforts also by Johan B & Mikael L.
Key journal papers from EISCAT 3D Simulation of post-ADC digital beamforming for large aperture array radars • – Johansson, G., Borg, J., Johansson, J., Lundberg Nordenvaad, M. & Wannberg, G. 2010 i : Radio Science Picosecond level error detection using PCA in the hardware timing systems • for the EISCAT_3D LAAR – Johansson, G., Hägglund, F., Carlson, J. What about entrepreneurship? • Listed in the CV instructions • ”Life on the other side” – Doing it by yourself – Being an administrator helps… in this world also • The support structure is there, however – LTU Innovation, Centek, ABI ……. – Fabulous support from division, department, colleagues • Eistec AB – Manufacturing and developing Embedded Systems (the Mulle) – Slowly becoming an entity of its own – At present housed in ABI; CEO + one engineer

Airborne distractions…. ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Theory) • – TFHS, Ljunbyhed, Lund University – 60 hp over one year, meetings once a month – Really thick pile of books…. Planning of cooperation TFHS – LTU – • Arvidsjaur – New connections gave new ideas – Pilot training with engineering on University level – Utilizing knowledge in program planning and ”manouevering the system” – Stop at ”Yrkeshögskolor”
Approaching the flight line Teaching at TFHS • – ”Rented out” to TFHS to teach Navigation in 2008 – 2-3 days every 2-3 weeks in Ljungbyhed – For me; an experience for life – A mix of two burecracies; Aviation and Education. Try that one… Getting the CPL • – Two intense weeks at Backamo, summer of 2010 – 25 flight training hours in nine days - Whooaaa ;-) So, then what? • – Flight Instructor is logical, combines teaching and flying – Another investment in time and money
The Pushers and the Pushee… Once (1994) when working 6 months for ABB in Raleigh, N.C., USA, I jokingly complained to my boss, ”- Don’t push me!” whereby he responded: ”- I’m supposed to do that, I’m the Pusher and you’re the Pushee!”. A couple of statements that stuck • – ”Go write a paper!” – ”When are YOU submitting YOUR docent application?” Pushing has effects, you just don’t know beforehand which… • – Even though well meant, it can be double sided – It creates an awareness of expectations – It can create anger and irritation
