Morris Knolls School Counseling Department The Role of the School Counselor The School Counseling Department is a comprehensive and innovative office which provides students in grades 9-12 with academic, personal, social, career and further education counseling. The department consists of Supervisor of Guidance, seven school counselors, a student assistance counselor and two secretaries.

Attendance Too many unexcused absences may result in a loss of credit in a class Attendance policy allows: 2 unexcused absences in Health 4 unexcused absences in a half year course 6 unexcused absences in PE 8 unexcused absences for a full year course • Morris Knolls Students have a 95.54% attendance rate Attendance Office Contact: • 4 th and 8 th absence notifications are published in Assistant Principal ASPEN reports Ms. Erin Morgan • Make up work – email teachers directly or call 973-664-2229 counselor for extended absences • Please review all attendance requirements in the Student/Parent Handbook

Study Skills - Homework All students should use their student planner! • Manage your time – design a realistic, yet productive schedule • Secure a “buddy” in each class with his/her phone number to call for missed assignments • Try to complete homework assignments the day the homework is assigned • Secure all teachers’ emails • Check class notes while they are still fresh • If there is no homework, be sure to read! • Organize, organize, organize …

Testing All students will be tested each year NJSLA – New Jersey Student Learning Assessments – Currently Under Review • Language Arts tested in grades 9, 10 • Math testing in grades 9, 10 – Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 • Testing Dates – May 18-19, 2020 • Must sit for all NJSLA exams PSAT 8-9 – Grade 9 – October 16, 2019 PSAT/NMSQT – Grades 10 and 11 New Jersey Student Learning Assessment – Science – Grade 11

Scheduling • Scheduling will begin in Jan. and conclude in March (Juniors, Sophomores then Freshmen) • Student will meet individually with School Counselor • Next year course requests based upon: • Teacher recommendations • Student performance • Post-secondary goals • Realistic/challenging expectations • Parent support and awareness is crucial • Parents must sign final course requests • Parent Waiver Forms must be completed by June 1

Eligibility All freshmen are eligible for fall and winter sports and clubs/activities To be eligible for spring sports and activities, students must be passing at least 30 credits at the end of the first semester.
Naviance What is Naviance? ➢ An interactive link between school and home opening avenues of communication ➢ Requires student and parent participation in each year of high school ➢ Aides students significantly during Junior and Senior year for college planning ➢ Useful tools that identify student strengths and areas of improvement for study habits
