Student Schedules MATES students complete a four-year course of study comprised of all honors/advanced high school courses, AP and embedded college courses. MATES utilizes the 4 x 4 Block Schedule Format. Each class period is 80 minutes. Students are scheduled for four courses each semester; fall and spring. Freshmen are enrolled in the following courses: FALL: SPRING: English I Physical Ed./Health Algebra I or RMA Geometry Spanish I or II World History Biology I Chemistry I Please visit OCVTS.org for the complete 4 year “Course of Study”.
Grading First point of contact should always be the instructor; if concerns continue, second point of contact should be your student’s counselor: Kate Conway 609-978-8439 ext. 4013 Julia Giglio 609-978-8439 ext. 4019 Grading Standards are outlined in your student agenda book Any student’s grade that falls below a 70 could be placed on review for “Pupil Improvement Plan” document (PIP). This document will be created by the student’s teacher(s), guidance counselor and the student. This improvement plan will remain in place until the grade increases. Good grades are important right from the start!
Make-up work protocol It is recommended for students to contact their teachers via email when absent if unsure what work needs to be completed. If you are absent the day of a test, quiz, presentation, etc. you are expected to complete it the day you return, unless other arrangements are made with your teacher. Likewise, all assignments due the day you are absent, will be due upon your return if they cannot be emailed that day. If a different date is arranged by the teacher, it is the student’s responsibility to remember the make-up date/time that was scheduled by the teacher and to show up on that assigned date. Neglecting to do so may result in a “zero” on the assessment. For extended absences, tests/quizzes are rescheduled during school (lunch, activity period, or missing the class period to take the make-up) or after school if transportation can be arranged. Some options for getting work while you are absent: have a friend bring it home; email your individual instructors; your parents can call the attendance secretary by 8:30 a.m. to arrange for work to be picked up in the main office by 2:00 p.m. that same day. Family Vacations: See form in your folder and student agenda book
College Credits Students will have the option to purchase credits at a discounted rate from OCC and Stockton for certain embedded courses they will already be taking at MATES. These courses will be taken during junior and senior years, with the exception of some sophomores in advanced Spanish. Students will be notified as these opportunities arise. Students may enroll in additional OCC courses through the Jumpstart program to earn college credits at a discounted rate. These courses would be taken after school through OCC and would not appear on the student’s MATES transcript . IMPORTANT! Please note, depending where your child goes to college, these credits may or may not transfer. Alternatively, they may be accepted as a different course, such as a free elective. Visit Njtransfer.org to see course equivalents at NJ state colleges.
STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS Stay organized from the start by using your agenda/planner book daily and making sure you are prepared for class. Recommended to review notes 40 to 45 minutes per night, per subject, when no other homework is assigned. Prioritize your assignments for the evening. Don’t wait until 8:00 at night to start your homework! Seek extra help immediately when you do not understand any part of your homework assignment. Any attempt is better then leaving it blank! Seek help from your teachers during lunch/activity period. Peer tutors can also be assigned by contacting your counselor. Have a “Homework Buddy”, someone from each class you can contact if you run into issues/questions on your assignments Take advantage of any free time: lunch, activity period, bus ride home, before practice for a sport/band, etc. Communicate your schedule to others, i.e. friends, employers. Set realistic goals for yourself. Study in short bursts to match your attention span. You will likely retain more information. Get a good night’s sleep.
HIB: Harassment, Intimidation, Bullying Kate Conway, Anti-bullying Specialist No child should feel uncomfortable or unsafe at MATES. Cyber Responsibility for Parents and Students Tips for parents : Keep the computer in a public area of your house. Set up your own social networking profile and link as “friends.” Ensure your child does not post personal information, and that your child engages with others respectfully online. Some Signs of Concern : Emotional distress during or after being online. Disrupted friendships. School avoidance. Tips for students: Anything said online or in text cannot be retracted, and screenshots can spread quickly. If you wouldn’t use that language in front of your parents/grandparents then don’t use that language online. Never Retaliate! Screenshot the harmful material and bring it to your principal or counselor.
HAVE A GREAT YEAR!!!! This presentation will be posted online for your reference.
