  1. Feeling Trapped with your food scrap? Presented By: Jordan Caldwell

  2. Discussion Topics  Intro to CGS Services  Are all landfill’s bad?  What do food scraps mean to landfills?  What makes a good food scrap stream?  How are food scraps valued?  CGS Food Scrap Program

  3. CGS Services “The One Stop Shop”  Portapot Service  State Approved Landfill  Confidential Paper Shredding  Recycle Center  Specialty Trucking  Curbside Service  Warehouse Leasing  Trash and Recycle  Zero Waste Solutions  Roll Off Container Service  Clean Fill  Compost  10 – 40 cyd Containers  Food Scrap Reuse  Gravel Pit  Construction / Destruction  Asphalt Plant Reclamation

  4. National MSW % Breakdown (2013) *MSW (Municipal Solid Waste)

  5. Modern Landfills Are Safe and Needed • Since the 1980’s, it is one of the most regulated industries in the world • Liner system to protect drinking water – 5’ of compacted clay – 60 mil HDPE Liner – Drainage Layer • Leachate Collection System • Monitoring wells to monitor drinking water • Methane generation = renewable energy source • 30 year closure policy • Provides an environmentally safe cost effective place for non-recyclable waste streams

  6. What Do Food Scraps Mean To Landfills? • Food Waste = 14.6% of landfilled materials – 70% moisture – Consists of Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sulfur and Ash – Carbon and Hydrogen combines to form CH4 (Methane) in the degradation process – Methane makes up +75% of natural gas – Methane can be used as a heating source or in power plants to produce electricity

  7. CGS Cattle Feed Operation • Started in 2006 • 900 head of cattle • Top nutritionists and Universities in the field have worked with CGS to develop program • Primarily Angus, Simmental, and Charolais Breads

  8. Traits of a good feed stream  Solid in Nature  Nutritional Value  Good Shelf Life  No Rancid Odor  No Packaging  Limited Handling Required  Large Volume  Large Containerization  Consistency of Stream

  9. How Is Food Scrap Valued? 1.) Sample is taken 2.) Sample is tested for nutritional value (protein, fat, carbs, vitamins, minerals, sugars, water concentration…etc) 3.) Nutritional and monetary values are compared to that of corn. *Corn is nutritionally the most well rounded feed source for cattle. 4.) Costs are subtracted  Transportation  Containerization  Labor  Fuel  Storage  Handling 5.) Value / Cost is established for the feed stream

  10. CGS Food Scrap Reuse Program • Feed stream is picked up from producer and hauled back to CGS

  11. CGS Food Scrap Reuse Program  Food Scraps are stored in Commodity Building until they are ready to be used for feed.

  12. CGS Food Scrap REUSE Program • Feed Streams are mixed in PTO powered mixer to make nutritionally optimal feed for cattle

  13. CGS Food Scrap Reuse Program • Feed is conveyed with PTO powered blender / conveyor into troughs for cows to eat

  14. Challenges to increasing food scrap diversion %  Indiana has some of the lowest disposal tipping fees in the US  Economics is the ultimate driver of US companies  Regulation of table served foods  Packaging, handling and sorting costs  Shelf Life  Volumes / Economies of Scale  Education

  15. Conclusion  Don’t judge a book by it’s cover  Not all food scraps are created equal  Reality - Expectations = Happiness  Work directly with a waste solutions expert to put together tailored plan to meet your goals
