  10. MS101 Middle School 101 is designed to assist in student transition to middle school. Students learn : ✓ Digital Citizenship ✓ Organization ✓ Public Speaking ✓ Writing ...and many other transition topics. We want to take away fear and replace it with excitement!

  11. ELECTIVE CLASSES Each student will have two exploratory classes each semester

  13. Elective CLASSES Art for one semester & Music Studies for one semester IF you are NOT in Band or Orchestra

  14. Band or Orchestra IF you are currently enrolled as a 5th grader NOTE: if you do not take Band or Orchestra you cannot be in Band/Orchestra in middle school without private lessons prior to joining

  15. Academic Intervention Please note: if your state assessment test scores do NOT meet standards in math or reading, Tier Math or Tier Reading may replace Elective classes

An Average Day • Breakfast begins at 7:50 • Doors open at 7:50 • School begins at 8:15 • 15 minute homeroom class • Seven 50 minute classes • Lunch during 4 th period • 4 minute passing period between classes • School dismisses at 3:25, students must be picked up no later than 3:35 unless in an after school activity • Activity buses available to selected areas 4:55* and 6:10* • We do have Late Start Mondays

  18. Middle School vs. Junior High School Your student will be placed on one of our two academic teams. Both teams are identical and have the same course offerings. This allows the team of 5 CORE teachers to meet daily and discuss student needs.

  19. GRADES Letter grades are given Homework is graded and counts as a grade. 100-90%=A 89-80%=B 79-70%=C 69-60%=D 59 and below=F

  29. New BOE Policies The Derby Board of Education has approved policies allowing students to take ownership of their computers after 8th Grade if certain criteria are met. There are also approved methods for parents to buy insurance and a protective case. Flyers will be made available and will be online soon.

Proposed Boundary Changes ● This is still a PROPOSED change until the BOE makes a final decision. ● Takes effect for the 2020-2021 school year ● No grandfathering allowed ● Transfers requests will be accepted ○ Point system where In-District Transfers are decided before any Out-Of-District is even considered. ○ Transfer applications available at 12:01 am on April 1st.

  37. FAQ’S • Human Sexuality Curriculum in P.E. • The DRC has a before and after school program with busing to and from DNMS. See the school website for details. • There is an address locator on the district website on the upper right to see if your student qualifies for busing. • No sports/activities in Sixth Grade (Can do clubs) • Second semester grades determine initial eligibility at 7 th Grade activities
