Experiment 3 Optical Rotation
Optical rotation or optical activity • The rotation of the plane of polarization of linearly polarized light as it travels through certain material-Chiral Materials. • Optical activity occurs only in chiral materials. • Sugar and corn syrup are chiral materials
• The Rotation of the electric filed can be clockwise or anticlockwise. • The material that rotates the electric filed in the clockwise direction is said to be Dextrorotary, • whereas the material that rotates the electric filed of linear plane wave counterclockwise is said to be levorotatory
The rotation of linear plane wave electric when passing through Dextrorotatory material Exiting Light Incident Light
The rotation of linear plane wave electric filed when passing through levorotatory material Exiting Light Incident Light
• Two chiral materials that rotate the electric filed of linear plane wave with the same amount but in different direction are called enantiomer of each other.
∆∅ = 𝛽 ∁ 𝑚 𝛽 is a constant called the specific rotation of a material; depend on wavelength and temperature. ∁ is the density in g/ml of the material 𝑚 is the length of the container.
