Objective of this talk • Promote the key role of Official Statistics in modern societies • Promote a clarification of the professional profile of “official statistician” within similar profiles. • Promote the acknowledgement of such a profile within Society. • Promote the prestige of official statisticians. • Promote EMOS program.

  3. Agenda 1) Introduction: the EMOS program. 2) Complexity within Official Statistics. 3) About the new paradigm in Statistics. 4) The oficial statistician profesional profile. 5) Final comments.

  4. 1) Introduction • Relevance of the EMOS program. • Construction of the European Union: sharing data. • Reliable data and índices for decisión and policies. • Complexity and impact of massive electronic recording. • Acknowledgement of an official statistician professional profile!

  5. 2) Complexity within official statisticis • Heterogeneous social characteristics, culture and traditions. • Heterogeneous technical and statistical limitations. • Responsability to offering reliable and representative representation to governments and the whole Society. • Social and economic knwolegde (multidisciplinarity). • Prestige of official statisticians! • Joint activities: oficial statistics producers, universities, school at lower levels. • Acknowledgement from Society! • Joint projects: innovation!

  6. 3) About the new paradigm in Statistics • Massive electronic recording. • Business intelligence, particularly especially mobile network operators, banks and financial transaction enterprises, energy-providing companies, etc.) • Statistics, now a transversal tool (like extra language and informatics). • Sampling and experiment design? • Privacy and representativity of electronic data? • Data mining, big data, machine learning, etc. • Demands from users and oficial statistics producers! • Flexibilty: specific extra courses in Madrid (Friday evening).

  7. 4) The oficial statistician professional profile • Attract students to EMOS masters! • Top statistician, • Multidisciplinary background. • Ability to work within a multidisciplianry team, • Knowledge of techniques and models associated to data mining, big data, machine learning.. • Huge amount of data and uncertainty in different formats (numeric, linguistic, graphical, video, etc.) • Compatible with similar professional profiles (risks of a too narrow EMOS master profiles).

  8. 5) Final comments • Future of EMOS program depends on the acknowledgement (and prestige) of official statistician profesional profile! • Actions at different levels in Society (education and media). • Easier widely useful web sites! • Service to governements and Society. • Connection to innovation in Society. • But we cannot pursue prestige of a profession that is not being acknowledged as a profession!
