ENOHE: Why? Amsterdam 2003 ff. • The ENOHE founding fathers and mothers of 2003 gathered in order to launch a European network of people interested in the same issue: promoting the idea of ombudsmen in higher education. • The diversity of the roles of the ombudsman in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) (and elsewhere) has enhanced the possibilities of discussing and developing existing and future models .
Why?: ENOHE‘s raisons d‘être • since then some 1500 colleagues from around the world have exchanged their experiences and working methods on-site (and many more electronically ) in – conflict (relationship) management – alternative dispute resolution – mediation and – general ombudsman tasks and duties as carried out in several European countries (and overseas) thru academic ombudsmen • …and met old colleagues and made new friends!
ENOHE: How? Annual Conferences • 2003 Amsterdam (then Madrid 2x, Vienna 2x, Zurich, Antwerp, London, Hamburg, Oxford, Warsaw, Innsbruck) • 2017 (propably) Strasbourg • strategic partners: national networks or institutions (like CEDU, OIAHE, IOI, EOI) • meeting and market places for ideas

ENOHE How: Internships • colleagues from members go for a week minimum duration to a partner organisation and are integrated into the respective receiving organization • sofar exchanges have taken place in: – Germany, – Poland, – The Netherlands, – Canada • the Secreatriat can provide an information leaflet on important things to be considered for internships • learning by doing
ENOHE: The “Triple A“ Main Aims (sequence by importance) • A dhocracy • A dvise • A dvocacy
“ Adhocracy “ • a flexible, adaptable and informal form of organization without formal structures (= opposite to “bureaucracy”) • characterized by an adaptive, creative and flexible integrative behavior based on non- permanence and spontaneity • allow to respond faster than traditional bureaucratic organizations (while) being more open to new ideas
(ENOHE / Ombudsmen) Adhocracy • …to respond faster than traditional bureaucratic organizations while being more open to new ideas… • OM have short(er) response times • OM are situated outside hierarchies • OM look for alternative solutions (outside of formal regulations) • OM have empathy and pro-active pragmatism • OM have flexibility (“ as much talking as possible, as little writing as necessary “)
Advocacy • = an activity by an individual or group which aims to influence decisions within political, economic, and social systems and institutions • done thru media campaigns, public speaking, commissioning and publishing research or conducting polls, lobbying (direct approach to legislators and / or decision makers) • role of social media!
