  5. PARTS OF THE ARTICLE, “WHY DOES MUSIC MOVE US? ★ Reading comprehension ★ Reading skill ★ Vocabulary activities

  6. READING COMPREHENSION Main idea: The connection between emotional reactions to music and biology. Before we start, I would like to ask these questions to you: 1. Is there any kind of music that sounds good to most people? 2. What kind of music do you like most? What makes this music interesting to you? 3. Do you think there will someday be a pill that cam make people more creative? Would you take it?

  7. SETTING ● Researchers are beginning to unlock the secrets of the brain. ● They are trying to explain why we get addicted to nicotine or how our neural pathways were changed because we studied piano as children. ● There is an explanation that connects music and biology.

  8. (Arguments and Supporting Details) ฀ Why does music move us? ★ The brain hears and translates sound into music. ★ Scans show that the brain is much more actively engaged with music than with speech. ★ Music is a basic human condition. ★ Our attraction to music is not only for enjoyment. It also brings people together. ★ The recognition of pitch can be altered by as much as one and a half tones with medication. ★ We know how the ear catches sound and how the sound waves are translated by about 30,000 auditory nerves into electrical and chemical signals that are transmitted to the brain.

  9. ฀Activity ฀ ฀Instructions: Mark each sentence as T (true) or F (false) according to the information in Reading 1 and the class or PPT. ฀ ฀____ 1.- Sound waves themselves do not enter the brain. ฀____ 2.- Music is everybody´s human experience. ฀____ 3.- People need to learn how to speak before they can appreciate music. ฀____ 4.- There is evidence that music may help people with brain injuries. ฀____ 5.- Music is only for pleasure.

  10. READING SKILLS ฀ What we need to know is that identifying the subject of the sentence in a reading article is a better way to understand or comprehend it through finding the perpetrator. ฀ ฀Perpetrator = the subject of the sentence = it is doing something ฀ ฀Examples: In the sentence “Researchers are beginning to unlock the secrets of the brain.” The subject of the sentence or the perpetrator is “researchers”. These researchers are doing something.

  11. ฀When the topic is technical and the style formal, Writers often skip the perpetrator. It is not important, not known, or too obvious. ฀฀Example : “Dissonance is generally perceived as unpleasant.” (No perpetrator is indicated, but we know it is “people” because of the context. ฀฀Considering the previous sentence. We can reword it to show the perpetrator. ฀ Example: “People generally perceive dissonance as unpleasant.” (The perpetrator is “people”) ฀ IMPORTANT TO KNOW: When situations or sentences have passive verb forms. We can add a prepositional phrase (by/ with) to show the perpetrator. ฀Example: “The movie was watched by thousands of people.”Here “thousands of people” is the perpetrator

  12. Activity Instructions: Look at the following ideas in context to determine the perpetrator and then write it in the blank. Write “unknown” if it is not possible or it is too obvious to determine the perpetrator from the context. ฀ ฀ 1.- If gramar is transmitted during the class. ____________________ ฀ 2.- The musicians are incorporating new styles to their songs. ___________________ ฀ 3.- That mail was written by Mr. Led. ______________________ ฀ 4.- People usually shake the body as a way of relaxation. __________________ ฀ 5.- The rhythm of this song can be danced with a new physical move. ___________________

  15. ฀ CONCLUSIONS ฀ ฀ The power of music when we hear or feel it depends on some biological factors in a certain way. One thing we are sure of is that music is a basic human condition. It means we were born primed to put sound in some sort of coherent order. Music is basically a response of the brain and neural mechanisms. Our emotional reactions of how we perceive the music we like or dislike are signals that demonstrate the connection between music and biology. To conclude, we can say that our attraction to music is not only for enjoyment. It is much more.Wars, agreements, and peace are treated with music to bring people together.
