  1. Engineering Careers Presentation Part 3 of a three phase engineering competition Overview Engineering is a highly exciting profession that utilizes the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet social and consumer needs. Many engineers develop new products. During the process, they consider several factors. For example, in developing an industrial robot, engineers specify the functional requirements precisely; design and test the robot's components; integrate the components to produce the final design; and evaluate the design's overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety. This process applies to the development of many different products, such as chemicals, computers, power plants, helicopters, and toys. In addition to their involvement in design and development, many engineers work in testing, production, or maintenance. These engineers supervise production in factories, determine the causes of a component’s failure, and test manufactured products to maintain quality. They also estimate the time and cost required to complete projects. Supervisory engineers are responsible for major components or entire projects. Engineers use computers extensively to produce and analyze designs; to simulate and test how a machine, structure, or system operates; to generate specifications for parts; to monitor the quality of products; and to control the efficiency of processes. Nanotechnology, which involves the creation of high-performance materials and components by integrating atoms and molecules, also is introducing entirely new principles to the design process.

  2. Engineering Careers The following contains a list of 17 engineering careers. There are many other specialized engineering careers that are available. This list is just a starting point for your engineering career exploration. Aerospace engineers Agricultural engineers Biomedical engineers Chemical engineers Civil engineers Computer hardware engineers Electrical engineers Electronics engineers Environmental engineers Health and safety engineers Industrial engineers Marine engineers Materials engineers Mechanical engineers Mining and geological engineers Nuclear engineers Petroleum engineers Why Choose Engineering Most engineers choose the career field because they like to solve problems. They do not want to have a mindless career, but one that challenges them. It makes the day go by fast and they look forward to going to work each day. Most will also say that they have chosen the field of engineering because of the salary potential. For instance, many Chemical Engineers have seen salaries over $100,000 right out of college!

  3. Rules of the Presentation The engineering career presentation is the last step of the 3 phase engineering competition. For this part, you are to research engineering careers that both you and your partner find interest. Create a 24” x 36” poster board describing that engineering field. The poster boards must show the name of the Engineering field, typical pay range (high, low and median), educational requirements, major employers and location of work, and at least one major accomplishment of that field. Each presentation will be graded on appearance, knowledge of the subject, and presentation skills of the team. The presentation should be no more than 3 minutes in length, and should explain each element of the poster board. The 24” x 36” poster board will be provided by South Central College. Research There are many places you can look for information on engineering careers. The internet is always a good starting place. There are many books on engineering careers as well. You can also call companies that have engineers on staff and speak directly to someone in the workplace. Some sites to get you started include: http://www.engineergirl.org/ http://www.khake.com/page53.html http://www.discoverengineering.org/ Judging The presentations will be judged by a panel of people from various backgrounds. You will present to the panel and the class. The final score will be added to the scores from the West Point Bridge Designer 2007 model and the Balsawood bridge project to create a final score. Teams with the top three scores will receive the 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd prizes.
