Encouraging c cross-racial frie iendships • As you read diverse books and watch multicultural programming, talk explicitly about what you are reading/seeing. • See Birgitte Vittrup’s research in NurtureShock by Po Bronson & Ashley Merryman • Focus not only on racial injustice, but also beauty, strength, brilliance, and joy of communities of color. Don’t set white children up to pity kids of color. • Recommended books on pages 111-114 of Raising Antiracist Kids .
Encouraging c cross-racial fr friendships • Look at your own friendships. What deliberate choices could make it more likely for you to have more cross racial friendships? • Visit several schools before choosing one. • Resource: Integrated Schools. • Seek out parks, scout troops, sports teams, summer camps etc that may be more diverse than the ones you typically choose. • For teachers: How can you form student groups (especially for young children) that will work together over the long haul?
Accompaniment Journal Prompts: • What do you most need right now to support and sustain your antiracism work? • Who are the people who are already walking beside you on this journey? Are there acquaintances who you want to develop a relationship with? • What places or communities help you find growth and encouragement? • What practices ground and sustain you? • Are there ways you can connect more with these people, places, and practices?
Closing intention May we break our silence, even if our voices shake. May we walk the path of justice. May we take up the work that is ours to do, so that all children may be free.
