Georgia General Assembly Law: House Bill 400 (May, 2010); House Bill 186; House Bill 713 mandates academic and career advisement, alignment with national career clusters and the development of a comprehensive K-12 career program of study Career Awareness in Elementary Schools – Who Am I? • Career-related Cluster Awareness activities in Grades 1-5 • Career Portfolio in Grade 5 Career Exploration in Middle Schools – Where Am I Going? • Student accounts on websites such as GAcollege411.org • Career Inventories taken in Grades 6 & 7 • Individual Graduation Plan (IGP)by the end of the 8th grade with student and parent consultation. THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW  Different programs for different student needs  Duplicated high school core credits are for elective credit only  Local districts have the flexibility on the number of high school credits that can be granted per grading period  A .5 weight is added to all dual credit core courses by GSFC when calculating the student’s HOPE Scholarship GPA  Rule violations/disciplinary action can be taken by both institutions 18 11/7/2014

  25. EARLY COLLEGE PROGRAMS 1. Partnership between local systems and colleges. 2. Specific guidelines regarding the program. 3. Targets poverty, minority and first-generation college students to complete one or two years of college while in high school. 25 11/7/2014

  26. GATEWAY TO COLLEGE 1. Partnership between local systems and colleges. 2. Targets students who have already dropped out or not on track to graduate. 3. Earn a diploma by dual enrollment credit in supportive college environment. 26 11/7/2014

ARTICULATION-THE BIG “A”  Students take their regular high school classes  College gives student college credit for comparable high school course  Agreed upon courses by local articulation agreement between the local system and college  Designated assessments must be passed to receive credit. 27 11/7/2014

STEP 4: ADVISEMENT SESSION 1) Prepare a resource packet 2) Checklist and Signoff Form copies for school, parents and college 3) Know area colleges application deadlines 4) Copy of student transcript 5) College dual contact person’s name, phone number and email address 6) Copy or access to all the dual program course lists 8) USG & TCSG Transfer Course List 9) Three prong process-meet dual credit program requirements, local system requirements and postsecondary requirements 10) High school counselor must approve any changes made after advisement session is completed. 30 11/7/2014

GADOE DE RULE--REQUIREMENTS 160-4-2-.34 DUAL ENROLLMENT-Feb. 3, 2010 (g) Full Time – enrollment for the equivalent of at least 12 quarter or 12 semester hours per school term of postsecondary credit at an eligible postsecondary institution. Be a ninth grader- senior, be enrolled in a public school, legal resident of Georgia for a calendar year before starting dual courses, maintain satisfactory academic progress in fulfilling high school graduation requirements. Must adhere to all guidelines associated to the programs. Exempt from required average instructional time Must take state assessment requirements Sign off form is required 31 11/7/2014
