DRD Projects Ltd. YOUR PARTNER IN PROCESS AND PACKAGING Heinz Sauce Manufacturing Plant Value Kitt Green £1.1 million Refurbishment & relocation of sauce manufacturing plant from Harlesden to Wigan. The plant comprised two batch tanks, hot & cold stock tanks, steam injector, cheese & bolognaise stock tanks, associated mechanical & electrical works and new control system. The work included detailed process design, interfacing with the existing operation and sharing several of the ingredient and batch storage systems with a totally new sauce manufacturing plant. The plant was made up from both new and ex-Harlesden tanks, reworked with modifications to supports, sensing equipment, mixers and heating. The project included a significant program / project management involvement because of the requirement to operate parts of the existing plant, dual purpose, with as near normal production as possible. Physically the installation of the tanks, pipework and control system also required detailed planning often during cleaning periods because of the inability to gain access during normal production. The plant was installed in a partitioned off area, positioned below existing raw material silo’s on a mezzanine floor within a central area of the main production floor.
DRD Projects Ltd. YOUR PARTNER IN PROCESS AND PACKAGING Heinz Sauce Manufacturing Plant continued . Kitt Green The Siemens S7400 PLC system controlled the plant with interfaces to existing ingredient systems and sauce manufacturing lines, the recipe control was effected via three OP37 operator interfaces with the system being linked via Asi to a Profibus system. A significant link was also engineered to the existing plant CIP system, this required the Siemens S7400 to talk directly to the existing PLC and for new programs and timings to be established on the existing CIP PLC. The Asi system consisted 12 loops used to control 186 Auto valves , 36 level probes, Mandoors, guard switches and proximity switches, with analogues being connected directly back to a Siemens ET200M I/O system. Motor control was via a combination of Asi and Profibus with 12 VSD’s being controlled via Profibus and 8 off DOL’s being controlled via an Asi loop. The software was prepared, tested and extensively simulated over a period of six months by a team of five software engineers all with process experience.
