A Few Numbers of Interest In 2017, Virginia’s mineral mines produced 68,939,408 tons. This is up from the 2016 mark of 67,746,160 tons. In 2017, Virginia’s mineral mines employed 3,841 production employees and 5,427 contract employees. Production employees worked 6,851,699 hours and contract employees worked 741,809 hours. Of this total 7,593,508 hours worked, 7,316,061 hours were worked without a lost time injury. This translates to 66,528,646 tons produced without a lost time injury. Of the 365 mineral mines active during 2017, 307 mineral mines worked without having a lost time accident.

We Also Honor Individual Miners DMM received 36 nominations for miners working from 15 to 35 years without a lost time accident in 2017. These miners will receive their awards later this year. Since this program began in 2007, a total of 296 miners have been recognized for working safely. These 296 miners represent 7,141 years without a lost time accident!!
