  1. Dickinson High School Course Syllabus Engineering Design and Presentation II Instructor: Sara Malloy Conference: 1st period Email: smalloy@dickinsonisd.org Course length: 2 periods, 1 year Phone: 281-229-6495 Tutorials: T/Th 2:35-3:15pm I. Course Description Engineering Design and Presentation II emphasizes solving problems, moving from well-defined toward more open ended, with real-world application. Students apply critical-thinking skills to justify a solution from multiple design options. Additionally, the course promotes interest in and understanding of career opportunities in engineering. This course is intended to stimulate students' ingenuity, intellectual talents, and practical skills in devising solutions to engineering design problems. Students use the engineering design process cycle to investigate, design, plan, create, and evaluate solutions. At the same time, this course fosters awareness of the social and ethical implications of technological development. II. Expectations All students are expected: (1) on time and ready to work, (2) respectful to all teachers/staff and fellow students, (3) follow all DISD/DHS policies, rules and guidelines, and (4) positive attitude. III. Grades Final grades are based on completion of assignments in the following categories: a. Formative assessments - 50% (this includes classwork, homework, labs, journals, reading responses, minor projects, notes and quizzes) b. Summative assessments - 50% (this includes extended labs, presentations, performances, unit test, projects, research papers, and curriculum-based assessments (CBA’s). IV. Classwork This class will utilize the concepts and skills that the student should have developed in previous engineering courses. This ADVANCED class will include complex projects that may require time commitment outside of class time. Students will also be participating in group activities and projects. There will be competitions outside of school hours that students will be expected to fully participate in. Schedule of events will be shared with students in class as events are finalized.

  2. In addition, in class work will consist of reading and answering questions, completing drawings using Engineering software, taking test and quizzes at the discretion of the instructor. Due to the nature of this course, makeup work will be difficult to complete and at the discretion of the teacher in accordance with DHS policy. V. Required Materials Materials for this class are graph paper and pencil/erasers every day. Please keep this in your DHS-provided binder. Face-to-face students need to bring a box of tissues and a medium bottle of hand sanitizer. OPTIONAL: Your student may also find colored pencils, protractor, calculator, ruler and tape/scissors useful (due to COVID, we cannot share supplies). VI. Field Trip Eligibility Due to COVID, field trips and student competitions will be at the discretion of the school district. If a student is selected to attend a CTE field trip, the student must be passing their all courses to be eligible. Eligibility will be determined using closest grading period to the event. Approval will be at the discretion of the CTE Director. VII. Fall Projects Our Fall projects are centered around Robotics, which integrates all of the STEM fields in a way that no other subject can compare. VEX EDR Robotics - Teams are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format. i. VEX starts in early September 2020, with regional competitions through February 2021 (Competition travel is pending district approval) ii. Depending on our division, there will be some after school and weekend competition meets. Students on these teams will be expected to be in attendance. iii. If we are unable to travel due to COVID , we will have after school scrimmages with the teams from DHS and/or Kranz/McAdams Junior High. COVID procedures will be followed (limited people, social distancing, etc) iv. Students/parents will be required to take financial responsibility for missing or damaged components from the VEX kits that are assigned.

  3. VIII. Spring Projects Spring projects are being considered and finalized. Student preference will be factored into project choices; however, final assignments will be based on team(s) need. spring projects include, but are not limited to the following: a. Individual Research Project b. Small Team Research Project IX. Other Expectations This class requires each student to be innovative, take initiative and responsibility for their learning. This class also utilizes an engineering shop and the students will be trained in safety. Due to the nature of the classroom, we ask face-to-face students to wear/bring long pants and closed-toe shoes (for example, tennis shoes). X. Special Notes We ask students to wear the Engineering t-shirt(s) for events. These can be purchased from the Engineering department during the Fall semester. If we need to, we can fundraise. Some families would rather purchase. Every effort is made to minimize the costs of these shirts. If this poses an undue financial strain, please communicate with me. Please note that this will not impact the grade of the student.
