  5. English The class study a text together. Genre, Grammar and Word level are discussed depending on the focus of the lesson. This year there will be a greater emphasis on writing and speaking and listening across the curriculum. Where possible, texts will link with the theme in Topic work. Drama texts will link with the theme in Topic work. Drama opportunities will also be incorporated when possible. This term we will be looking at and learning about: • Stories with Historical Settings • Report Writing • Instructions • Advertisements

  6. English After the main teaching session, involving shared reading and writing, children are divided into three ability groups for the rest of the lesson. They will then work independently, in pairs or small groups. then work independently, in pairs or small groups. Throughout the year children will be set personalised targets for writing, focusing on handwriting, punctuation and sentence structure. They will also be set targets for reading. Children will be working towards targets as set out in the new target booklets, following the New National Curriculum.

  7. Reading in Year 3 Owls • Children read individually or together in group reading during the English lesson. • Children in small groups read aloud or silently in guided reading working with the teacher. They are guided reading working with the teacher. They are then expected to answer various questions about the text. The children are grouped according to their ability. • They will be expected to practise with their class reader at home as part of their homework. Children need to bring reading books into school every day.

  8. Maths Our main focus this term will be understanding Place Value and • Number (partitioning numbers into units, tens, hundreds and thousands). Children will be working towards targets as set out in the new • target booklets, following the New National Curriculum. In Year 2: 2x, 5x and 10x and related division facts.   10. Other Topics During the year we will be covering: • History/Geography The Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age • RE The Bible, Jewish Hanukkah, The Day of the Dead. The Bible, Jewish Hanukkah, The Day of the Dead. The Christmas Story. • Design Technology Stone Age cooking – Making and designing shelters – Dying cloth using natural materials. Tool making and pottery. In December we will be cooking Christmas cakes! Please can you provide decorations to complete your child’s designs. If you can spare some time to help with cooking activities please let me know. It is fun!

Homework in Year 3 • We plan homework carefully alongside work that children do at school to ensure that all activities are appropriate for individual children. children. • Your child shouldn’t be expected to spend much longer on homework than the recommended times. • Guidelines are available this afternoon.

  12. Sports & PE Kit • For PE, children should wear a t-shirt, navy or black shorts and school plimsolls with non-marking soles (not trainers) - these are essential for indoor activities. All pupils have been placed in one of four houses and should wear the appropriate colour t-shirt: should wear the appropriate colour t-shirt: Nelson (blue) Cavell (red) Walpole (green) Vancouver (yellow)

  14. Sports & PE Kit For swimming sessions, it is essential for children to have a • swimming costume or pair of trunks with a swimming hat and towel. The swimming pool rules specify that girls should wear a one piece swimming costume and boys wear trunks or short swimming shorts. It is not necessary for children to wear goggles. It is essential that all PE/games/swimming clothing and footwear is • clearly named. P.E. clothing should be placed in a named bag, brought into school on Monday to be available all week, and taken home at the end of each week.

  15. Assessments • Assessments for Year 3 Owls will take place throughout the year and you will be informed about your child’s progress through termly reports, the annual report and parental reports, the annual report and parental consultations. • A specific assessment week for Year 3 Owls will start on Monday 8 th May 2017 – please make sure your child is in school for this week and avoid medical appointments or holidays.
