E-Prescribing 2015 Effective March 27, 2015, Physicians will be required to “e - prescribe” both controlled and non-controlled medications. Can be accomplished through EMR applications or via a “standalone” system EMR or standalone systems MUST be certified by Surescripts, the national prescription-routing network
EMRs You must check to make sure your EMR is certified by Surescripts AND that it meets the DEA’s EPCS (Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances) security requirements/certification

Additional Factors to consider Consider the costs of different vendor products be they standalone or EMR including 24/365 phone access to vendor Cost of importing or linking patient demographics from your billing/EMR system to the e-prescribing tool Phonescripts/Paperscript limitations Waivers/Exemptions
