CoSM Festival of Research Presentations The College of Science and Mathematics invites its constituents and participants in its programs to present their research and ideas to the community on September 20th, 2019. Different opportunities are available. Please use this webpage to save a space on our agenda to present. The deadline to register is Friday September 6th. Podium Talks Listed below are four categories of talks that may be given during the Festival. Every effort will be made to accommodate every presentation. Individuals may present only one presentation during a minisymposia session. Individuals however may also give a blitz, pub science or improv presentation. A UTHORS M UST S UBMIT T HE F OLLOWING M ANDATORY I NFORMATION Title (200 character limit) Presenting author(s) Presenting author contact information (email & phone) Times when presenting authors are free for presentation Keywords (limit 5) Author and co-author affiliation (program and/or department, Institution if not CoSM: e.g., BMS, NCBP MS, BMB undergraduate, PSY honors, WPAFB) Type of Podium presentation (Minisymposia, blitz, etc.) C ATEGORIES OF P ODIUM T ALKS Standard Mini Symposium Podium Talk: o A traditional verbal presentation discussing hypotheses, discovery, data, and conclusions o A brief introduction targeting an intelligent but underinformed audience is recommended o A statement of hypothesis tested, data generated, conclusions, and future research directions are normal o Presentations will not exceed 10 minutes . o 3 minutes allowed for Q&A. o PowerPoint or .pdf formatted slides suggested. o This is recommended for undergraduate and graduate students with one or more years of research. Pub science o Verbal presentations not exceeding 10-15 minutes. o PowerPoint or .pdf formatted slides suggested. o 3-5 minutes allowed for Q&A. o Presentation targets audience who may or may not typically get involved with scientific discussions. They are informal and encourage audience participation.
The audience is feels empowered to learn and the scientist speaker gains valuable perspective on his or her own work. Improv o Presentations are Intended for comic relief. o Presenters will be given 4-8 slides they have not seen before. o The content of some slides will be outside their comfort level o Presenters will have ≈ 1-2 minutes to prepare a fictional, pseudoscience presentation using the slides provided. Poster Presentation I NSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSION A UTHORS M UST S UBMIT T HE F OLLOWING M ANDATORY I NFORMATION Title (200 character limit) Presenting author(s) Presenting author contact information (email & phone) Times when presenting authors are free for presentation Keywords (limit 5) Author and co-author affiliation (program and/or department, Institution if not CoSM: e.g., BMS, NCBP MS, BMB undergraduate, PSY honors, WPAFB) P OSTER P RESENTATION G UIDELINES All Posters must remain posted for the duration of the assigned poster session. All presenters are encouraged to put the posters up Thursday afternoon 3-5 pm and leave them up until the end of the day. The presenting author(s) must be beside their poster during the assigned time. T he poster board surface is ≈1.1 m (3’8”) tall by ≈1.8m (6’) wide. S UGGESTIONS Create a label for the top of the poster indicating title and authors. Lettering should be no less than 2.5 cm (1”) high. Text and illustrations should be comfortable read from a distance of 1.5 m (4- 5’). A typical poster layout may resemble what is depicted below. There are many satisfactory alternatives.
The organizers are not responsible for any posters that are not removed at the designated time. Posters left in the Learning Center after that time may be discarded.
