Collaborative Institute School experience Survey (CAYCI) survey was conducted in all county Middle and High Schools and the results showed that 9.1% of respondents reported prescription drug misuse in the past 30 days, compared to data from the National Survey on Drug and Health, which shows the state of Ohio’s Substance Use Disorder rate is 2.4% (NSDUH 2015). 4/26/17 Priority Population These are the most important things you need to understand about our priority population: 1. Our priority population will be Middle and High School youth in all 3 county schools and the Career Center (Vocational/Technical). 2. During a recent meeting of the Prevention Data Committee, members reported that the problem may be greater that the Community and Youth Collaborative Institute School Experience Survey (CAYSI) conducted in 2013/14 shows due to students underreporting use because the students may have felt that the survey was not truly confidential. 3. It was shared during the Prevention Data Committee that the majority of those in attendance believed that our community has a culture of “drug sharing”. This culture feels that “sharing” leftover medication is not a problem, because there was no reason to purchase more medications if you or someone you know already has some. This belief leads youth to believe that it is “OK” to take other’s medication without a doctor’s input. Problem Statement • Decrease the misuse of prescription drugs by youths in Middle and High School and the Vocational/Technical School in all 3 county school districts. Per our 2013/14 CAYCI study, 9.1% of County youth in Middle and High School have misused prescription drugs in the past 30 days, which is greater than the national average of 2.4% (NSDUH 2015). 3
