RX DRUG SAFETY - VISION Our vision - RX Drug Safety is a physician led coalition made up of community members and experts collaborating to prevent opioid misuse and abuse to help save lives and promote wellness in Placer and Nevada Counties. Our goals - To tackle the growing problem of opioid overdoses and misuse in Placer and Nevada Counties by gathering multiple stakeholders to assess and create solutions focusing on the three federal priority areas of safe prescribing practices, medication-assisted treatments and increasing access to naloxone.

ACTION TEAMS COMMUNITY BASED PREVENTION SMART Goals: • Garner 100% participation for the California Health Kids Survey from all county school districts. • Give medication safety support to community organizations and to the public. • Community wide push - “Lock it up, Clean it out, Drop it off”. • Promote DEA Drug Take Back Events. Achievements: • 84% Participation in Placer County Schools, • Brochure designed for community orgs and patients. • Spring DEA drug take back day yielded 5,600 pounds of prescription drugs, up 55% from fall 2015.

ACTION TEAMS PRESCRIBERS AND PHARMACISTS SMART Goals: • Develop and encourage the use of Safe Prescribing Practices for various modes of practice. • Promote patient awareness of opioid dangers and other methods of pain management. • Work with payors to support coverage for alternative forms of pain management. Achievements: • Safe Prescribing Practices • Patient Campaign • Pharmacy Project, in conjunction with Intervention and Recovery Team

ACTION TEAMS FIRST RESPONDERS SMART Goals: • Launch first responder’s naloxone pilot program in remote areas of Placer and Nevada Counties. • Encourage safe disposal of prescription drugs by installing prescription drop off boxes at various locations. Achievements: • Naloxone Pilot Program in Roseville PD and Grass Valley PD • Walgreen RX Disposal Box – Call to Action

ACTION TEAMS INTERVENTION TREATMENT AND RECOVERY SMART Goals: • Increase buprenorphine prescriptions by 5%. • Increase clinics connected with Project ECHO. • Increase number of “x” certified physicians by 20%. • NEW – Assessing and solving barriers to treatment in Placer County Achievements: • Two new “x” certified physicians at Western Sierra Clinic • Buprenorphine Prescriber Survey Results • List of Recovery providers

BUPRENORPHINE PRESCRIPTION SURVEY Takeaways: There are not enough prescribers in the community who have an “x” certification AND who also take Medi-Cal More education for prescribers needed:  Benefits of prescribing buprenorphine for both addiction and pain management  Provide physicians with avenue to receive their “X” license A robust referral service is needed:  When prescribing buprenorphine for addiction, the patient will become long term. Many prescribers do not have the capacity for this type of patient.  A list of all area recovery treatment providers should be given/promoted to all prescribers

  15. ACTION TEAMS DATA AND COLLECTION SMART Goals: • Increase physician participation in CURES 2.0 by 50%. • Track data of pharmacies prescribing naloxone . Achievements: • Data added to Placer Dashboard. http://www.pncms.org/rxdrugsafety/ • Pharmacy survey in progress.

UPCOMING FOR SACRAMENTO COUNTY TASKFORCE • The Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society (SSVMS) is the lead for the Engaging the Medical Community and Overdose Prevention Subcommittee. • SSVMS is applying for the CDPH grant, “Local Coalitions to Address Opioid Misuse and Abuse” • Support the ongoing work of the Sacramento Opioid Taskforce • Collaborate with El Dorado and Yolo County Public Health Departments • Focus areas: • Safe Prescribing Guidelines and Physician Education • Alternative Therapies and Patient Education • Medicated Assisted Treatment / Buprenorphine Prescribers • Naloxone • Pharmacies • Police Departments • Outreach to Policymakers on Local, State and Federal Levels

SIERRA SACRAMENTO VALLEY MEDICAL SOCIETY Why SSVMS? • The Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society is dedicated to bringing together physicians from all modes of practice to promote the art and science of quality medical care and to enhance the physical and mental health of our entire community. • Proudly representing over 3,500 physicians and their patients in El Dorado, Sacramento and Yolo counties. • Dedicated physician led committees • 44 member delegation that develops and recommends healthcare policy positions • Mental Health advocacy for patients, White Paper on “Crisis in the Emergency Room” • Philanthropic programs that support the future of medicine and providing specialty care to the undocumented and uninsured.
