  1. ‘Connectivity Matters’ Embracing BYOD and wireless networking in Education 6 June 2013 Tris Simmons, Sr Product Marketing Manager, NETGEAR Ken Rocha, Principal, Harvest Park Middle School Thomas Cheng, Sr Product Manager, NETGEAR

  2. ‘Connectivity Matters’ Agenda BYOD Trends Fad or Future? BYOD Challenges Overcoming concerns to adoption BYOD IT network implications BYOD = Just add wireless, right? The Digital Class Empowering potential Steps to success Supporting your journey with the right IT network choices

  3. Fad or Future? ‘Can BYOD make a difference to teaching and learning?’

  4. Tablet Computing Revolution 35.4% 19.4% 2011 2012 ‘Shipments of client devices to the US education sector grew 15.4% yoy 2012 with volume nearing 8.5m units worth $5bn. Tablets grew 103% ’ 4 IDC May 2013

  5. Mix of technologies at play Chalkboard Projector Smartboard Laptop Tablet A clear shift from left to right is taking shape in Education establishments, but getting there means making the right choices 5

  6. Connectivity Matters World Stage + Scotland: £60m government spend on tablets for universities, colleges and schools + South Korea: pledged to move to an all tablet curriculum by 2015 + Thailand: 800,000 tablets issued to first graders in 2012. + England: ESSA Academy – 800 tablet roll out to all students and staff + USA: In McAllen, Texas, public school officials opt for tablets over PC’s….plan to distribute 25,000 in years ahead 6

  7. The Growth of Wireless 3 x wired growth rate $4bn 10% CAGR 10% $3bn CAGR 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 Infonetics, Q4 2012 7

  8. The future ‘With mobile - device based learning, it’s not just about replacing text books, pens or paper. It is about inventing new ways of learning and teaching, both individually and collaboratively’

  9. From Note Pad to iPad Tablet and mobile device computing is strictly for the fortunate few that can afford the expense! Budget or budget constrained? Consider a ‘Paper to Digital’ Cost Benefit Analysis If you could save 50% of your paper cost…. 9

  10. Savings potential illustration + Tablets vs the library • Consider 1,000 kindle books = ~1GB + e-textbooks cost considerably less • Initial expense and re-use; less wear and tear + Less paper printed / Reduce CO2 footprint + Digital lessons / assignments only + Tablets interactive, unlike text books + e-textbooks updates: Instant + 1-2-1 customised learning and content + Content shared collaboratively across multiple devices via the cloud Consider also…..2 or 3 tablets for the same price of 1 PC! 10

  11. Transformational Change Potential Why should IT should be a stage in the Education learning process? It should be the way of the Education process IT IT 11

  12. Research “It appears that 1-2-1 tablets offer a sense of inclusion that allow children, irrespective of socio-economic status or level of attainment, an opportunity to thrive through a new pedagogical model of pupil-led learning .” Tablets for Schools programme 2012 – UK 12

  13. Changing Perceptions: 1-2-1 tablets + Children’s + Teachers’ + Parents perceptions perceptions perceptions + Greater motivation to + Greater motivation + Can offer more learn and be creative and engagement with independence and school work choice; they can + Collaborative nature of facilitate rather than the tablet + More aligned to instruct schoolwork than + Disruptive behaviour before + Easier to monitor and distracted track progress + Concerns over device costs, breakages and + Technology confidence theft do continue varies; training is key + Concerns about + Lack of curriculum excessive use based content, but creative and innovative + Parents own lack of ways are used confidence in technology 13

  14. Applications and Apps Transforming Learning ‘Apps are the driver for new learning styles, techniques, discovery, personal development and interaction with content, fellow learners and educators’ + iTunes U • Content downloads topped 1BN in Feb 2013 • 75,000 education related apps in the App Store + Raspberry Pi • Teaching learners to code at minimal cost 14

  15. Raspberry Pi The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card-sized single-board computer developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools + Type A: ~$25 + Just add: • Keyboard • Power • Monitor • Mouse • Storage (SD) • Network adapter • Or a laptop! 15

  16. The concerns ‘Is the effort to support BYOD worth the gain?’

  17. Managing concerns The pitfalls…… Can be overcome …… Tablets can freeze, get hacked or crash Data store, backup and retrieve options Battery life can be limited Average battery life exceeds most school hours Secure data, erase and ‘ findmytablet ’ apps deterrence Highly prized by thieves unlike text books Consider hybrid BYOD / SIOD Requires skilled, expensive engineers to fix Intuitive nature and easy of use inherent in tablets Not everyone is confident with technology from learners to teaching staff Easy ‘lock out’ options to manage access Too many apps = distractions in class I forgot my ‘tablet’ replaces I forget my Data store, backup & retrieve from the school ‘homework’ network Downloads could get out of control Block apps, including browser access Adoption of best practice ‘ Paper and Appliance Policies’ BYOD is an open can of worms from a security perspective should be implemented 17

  18. Is it right for us? + Embracing mobility depends on who is on board with you! 18

  19. It’s right for us! + Embracing mobility requires a collaborative approach with learners, educators, parents and support staff 19

  20. IT on the Move Are you ready and able to support BYOD? Off-Site On-Site 20

  21. Piecemeal or Wholemeal adoption? ? (BYOD) Bring Your Own Device Standard Issue Only Device Advantages Disadvantages Advantages Disadvantages Zero hardware Compatibility / support / One platform CAPEX & OPEX costs (tablet) costs integration challenges from multiple types of device and OS Zero associated Not every learner has access to Access for all during Depreciation, repair and maintenance costs a device lessons replacement costs Paced and Security risks (sensitive data on Easy swap out for Security risks (lost data, managed devices, etc) faulty units and data devices etc) introduction restore Devices handed in or taken home? ‘A Hybrid approach allows trial, evaluation, re- alignment, progression’ 21

  22. The approach ‘Supporting mobile -devices just means adding wireless networking, right?’

  23. Customer challenges we’ve seen….. Ch Cheap lap laptops Scalability vs vs premiu ium Tablets with no Firewall brand RJ45 capacity Gu Guest st Ac Acces cess Laptop Specifications Singl gle Band d or En Environme onment nt Dual Du l Ba Band d Load Balancing cing interfe rfere rence nce Ac Acces cess s Point nt Broadband Learner to connection Device ratios speed Staff / Teacher Acces ess Point Training Placem ement ent PoE switching Peak tr traffic Laptop needs peri riods profiles 23

  24. Top Tips for Wireless Deployments Subject Notes Many tablets do NOT have RJ45 You need to connect devices to the network either wirelessly or with wires. The latter involves connections using a copper cable, typically a Cat5e wire with an RJ45 connector port on the end device. iPads for example, do not have these ports and so can only connect wirelessly. Laptop Specification The type and spec of laptop you use in your school can affect the wireless performance. Cheap laptops = issues Laptop Profile The size of the laptop profile can make a huge difference to the time it takes for all 30 to log on Environment Lots of other devices use the 2.4Ghz range used by wireless (e.g. Dect phones, burglar alarm sensors, door sensors, headsets, etc.) These can cause interference and issues result Position of the Access Points We have visited schools who have mounted APs on the floor and wonder why the coverage is poor! Network (PoE) switches Make sure these are fast enough for the new wireless system. Scalability What is your device to learner ratio? Can you cope with a doubling or even tripling of the load on the network? Broadband Connection 1000 mobile devices fighting for a share of a 6MB connection will leave your network standing still Guest Access Contractors, Temp Teaching Staff, Open Days, Visiting Lecturers need access, but in a safe and secure environment Load Balancing Peak periods need to be seamless experience for all. Ensuring the network can manage multiple almost simultaneous tablet connections is vital Dual Band or Single band Access Congestion can occur with different user groups. Differentiate between device types, applications Point Deployments and user groups for a more seamless service 24

  25. NETGEAR wireless service advice A host of options exist to manage user access and traffic + Limit # of devices allowed to connect • MAC authentication • SSID • Guest authentication / Captive portals + Regulate type of devices allowed to connect • Tablets, but not smart phones • Smart phones ok, but bandwidth limited + Utilise Dual Band Access Points • Place heavy or priority users on 5GHz (less busy and less interference) • Place lighter or less important users on 2.4GHz 25

  26. IT Eco-System The wider impact of BYOD Tablet/ Security BYOD Voice, Video Storage & Data Performance 26
