History The Columbia-Richland Communications Center (CRC 911) became operational in 1999, as the result of a 911 Communications Center Consolidation Agreement entered into by the City of Columbia and Richland County. Since that time, CRC 911 has been providing continuous consolidated emergency dispatch services for the Columbia Police Department, Richland County Sheriff’s Department, Columbia Fire Department, and the Richland County Emergency Services Department. Our service area encompasses a geographical area of 771 square miles. In addition, CRC 911 provides non-emergency dispatch services to various public service agencies in the Columbia-Richland County area. CRC 911 is funded and managed jointly by the City of Columbia and Richland County. Operational control and guidance is provided by an Oversight Committee, which is comprised of officials, or their designees, from the Richland County Emergency Services Department, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, the Columbia Police Department, and the Columbia Fire Department.

  10. Who we are… Columbia-Richland Communications (CRC) is the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for the City of Columbia and Richland County. We provide 911 access and service, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year, to citizens and agencies in Columbia and Richland County.

  11. Call Volume In 2012 CRC 911 personnel processed over one million (1,102,640) telephone calls. In 2012, on average, every (24 hours), CRC 9-1-1 personnel: Processed – 3,021 Telephone Calls Dispatched – 1,477 Calls for Service. Incidents range from complaints about barking dogs and loud music to more serious calls such as house fires, medical emergencies, and violent crimes .

How it works… The citizen calls 911 for assistance The 911 Call Taker answers the line and begins questioning the caller (5 Ws) The 911 Call Taker enters the call into the CAD (computer aided dispatch) system The 911 Telecommunicator notifies the emergency responder via a radio system and ‘dispatches the call’ to closest available unit with the appropriate agency **This all can be done simultaneously, as calls can be updated while the emergency responder is proceeding to assist the citizen**
