What is a Concussion? A traumatic brain injury- A bump, blow, or jolt to the head or hit to the body causing head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Concussion/Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Symptoms Headache Nausea/ Vomiting Dizziness Blurred Vision Confusion/ Fuzzy Thinking Sensitivity to light/ Noise Balance Problems Irritability Poor sleeping Drowsiness Anxious/ Nervous Fatigued Forgetful Sad Difficulty Concentrating
Sample Interventions In the School Setting Shortened school day; Elevator pass to avoid Rest periods in health Limited screen time walking up stairs room- darken room as able Temporarily remove Sunglasses, avoidance of Consider another from PE class and recess glare, avoidance of assignment instead of direct sunlight music, band, orchestra, chorus Shortened assignments- Delayed testing, tested Prolong/reschedule e.g., 10/20 problems, 10 over several days in standardized testing, e.g. instead of 30 minutes “chunks” SAT, ACT, etc.
