Peat-free transition Scope of production Certification Product Sustainability issues*: • Peat is not renewable • Peat bogs support unique wildlife and are under threat (90% of the UK’s peat bogs have been lost, along with the wildlife they used to support) • Peat bogs are the UK’s largest store of carbon • Peat bogs are a source of drinking water: over 70% of the UK’s drinking water comes from peatland areas UK Government peat reduction targets. • UK Government intends to ban peat from growing media in the near future. Commercial drivers • There is public pressure to reduce peat consumption and also from professional bodies (Royal Horticultural Society, Which? Magazine, professional gardeners…) *Source: WRAP (2012) “The Retailers’ Guide to Reducing Peat in Growing Media”.
Peat-free transition Scope of production Certification Product • With the current model we are confident that, within two years, our capacity for compost production will be able to process in the region of 2 million litres (880 tonnes of SCG). • This model is scalable to accommodate significantly higher level of production.
