Introduction Kitui County is located in the Lower Eastern part of Kenya, bordering Tharaka and Meru to the North, Tana River to the East, Machakos and Makueni to the West and Taita Taveta to the South. The county has a population of 1,012,709 (2009 census) and an area of 24,385.1km2. It has 8 subcounties,40 wards,247 villages and 5010 vijijis.

  5. Community Led Total Sanitation This is an integrated approach to achieving and sustaining open defecation free (ODF) status. CLTS entails the facilitation of the community’s analysis of their sanitation profile, their practices of defecation and the consequences, leading to collective action to become ODF. CLTS focuses on igniting a change in sanitation behaviour rather than constructing toilets. It concentrates on the whole community rather than on individual behaviours. CLTS involves no individual household hardware subsidy and does not prescribe latrine models. A community or a household could start with a simple facilities and progressively climb the ladder to improved facilities

  7. CLTS-KITUI SITUATION • Kitui County has a total of 4,930 villages(vijijis) • Kitui county ODF campaign was launched on 3 RD July 2014. • 3,479 villages are already certified as ODF. • The remaining 1,451 are at advanced stages of attaining ODF status.

  8. County Financing for CLTS Activities  Kitui county Government through its flagship programme christined PATUMA(Pamoja Tujikinge Mangojwa Intergrated programme) brought on board 2100 CHVs with a view of ensuring that each CHV delivered a village ODF.  The CHVs were to be paid a monthly stipend of Ksh. 2,000 and a further ksh.1,000/- saved for IGA activities.

  11. Post-ODF activities.  Kitui Rural sub-county has its two ditricts of Lower Yatta and Kisasi attaining ODF status in 2014 and 2017 respectively.  Post Odf activities going on in lower yatta include:

  12. 1. Skill upgrading-Artisan are trained on cheap, affordable techniques of latrine construction

  13. 2 . Strengthening of social norms through training of local leaders on social norms.

  14. Enhancing Social Norms • Training of 250 CHVs, 44 Chiefs & Assistant chiefs, 5 PHOs, to strengthen ODF sustenance norms • Review meeting with Chief on Baraza on Sustainbility of ODF
