Universities Pt. 1 Vocabulary: Monastery- a home for monks ● The Gupta empire had many universities, some were Hindu and some were Buddhist. Mostly males were allowed to attend, but the daughters of the teachers were allowed to also come.
Universities Pt.2 ● Students learned to how to make medicinal cures out of bark, roots, leaves, and minerals. ● They used the front claws of giant ants to stitch the wounds.
Literature ● Gupta writers created many kinds of literary works ● Scholars and lawyers wrote about Hindu law and religion ● The Puranas (“Great Lore”) contains many Hindu legends ● The Mahabharata (“Great Work”), a poem composed over hundreds of years reached the final form during the Gupta era ● The Bhagavad Gita (“Song of the Lord”) is part of the Mahabharata

18.5 Painting ● The Gupta Empire is famous for its beautiful paintings. ● The greatest ancient Indian paintings are known as the Ajanta cave murals. ● Artists made the paints from minerals and clay. ● The paintings had graceful pictures and others that were not so graceful. ● The popular subjects were deities and other religious topics.
18.6 Sculpture ● Some of the sculptures were made out of stone, wood, bronze, terracotta, and clay. ● Some sculptures also portrayed very important moments of peoples lives. ● Some sculptures were created to stand on their own and others were created to hang on the sides of walls.

Metalwork ● Metalwork was one of the most amazing accomplishments in the Gupta Empire. ● Kings controlled mines of gold, copper, and iron ● The coins were engraved with pictures honoring Gupta rulers. ● Coins highlighted the rulers wealth and achievements in art, politics and war.
Metalwork Part 2 ● An iron pillar at Meharauli was an example of their skill ● The pillar is made of solid iron, stands 25 feet tall and is about 13,000lbs ● The pillar engraved with a story that describes the accomplishments of a Gupta emperor
Mathematics ● Gupta mathematicians made further advances in ways of writing numerals 1-9, they were the first to create the number 0 ● A man named Aryabhata combined mathematics and astronomy to make important discoveries.

chapter 18.9/Roads ● Gupta rulers encouraged trade by making a huge network of well built roads. ● They were built carefully with precision. ● First the engineers cleared the path of all debrisbkh. . ● They finally smoothed the ground. ● The finished roads were made with hard packed dirt.
chapter 18.9/Roads continued…. ● The roads were designed for safety. ● They were built a few feet above the ground. ● Ditches and canals ran across the sides of the road. ● when Monsoons came through since it was a few feet of the ground the flooding is prevented. ● Signs along the road told travelers where they were. ● They also marked signs so people could figure how far they had traveled.
Roads (continued, continued, continued ● Wells along the road provided water for drinking. ● A few rest houses gave travelers a place to rest and spend the night. ● It was very helpful for trade.
