CAS ASA upd update tes 2018 2018 Recent Progress and Future Plans of CASA and Pipeline Takeshi Nakazato (NAOJ) on behalf of CASA and Pipeline teams
CASA clean/tclean mosaic issues • Announcement to ALMA users https://almascience.nao.ac.jp/news/public-announcement-of-casa-imaging- issues-affecting-some-alma-products • See NAASC Memo 117 for technical detail http://library.nrao.edu/public/memos/naasc/NAASC_117.pdf – Mosaic Issue #1: 7m-array data, Cycle 1-4 (< 5.1.1) too high flux density due to non-optimal definition of the PB – Mosaic Issue #2: both 12m- and 7m-arrays, Cycle 5 (5.1.1) aliasing due to wrong use of truncated PB for visibility gridding – Basically the problem is incorrect modeling of antenna primary beam – Based on the analysis using simulated data, those issues have gone in the Cycle 6 release (5.4.0) 2
CASA Common Astronomy Software Applications (CASA) and ALMA Pipeline • A data reduction and analysis software of data observed by radio astronomical telescopes, both interferometer and single-dish • Developed in collaboration with NAOJ, NRAO, ESO, ASIAA and IDIA • CASA officially supports ALMA, VLA, Nobeyama 45-m, and ASTE • ALMA Pipeline is developed on top of CASA • All ALMA PI data are processed by CASA and Pipeline before delivered to observers and processed data are archived • The latest CASA release is 5.4.0 (for ALMA) and 5.4.1 (for VLA) • Schedule of next year: – CASA 5.5 (February 2019) – CASA 6.0 (April 2019) – first Python 3 release – CASA 5.6 with Pipeline for Cycle 7 (July 2019) 3

CASA 7
CASA Support of Nobeyama 45m and ASTE • Pipeline (and underlying CASA) successfully processed NRO 45m telescope data. Improvement ongoing. • Data reduction test using ASTE data is ongoing 8

CASA Priorities for CASA 5.5/5.6 10
CASA Major Development Activities 11
CASA CASA 6 • Compatible with Python 3.x (development based on 3.6) • Modularization: CASA Tasks and Tools from casatasks import tclean from casatasks import sdbaseline from casatools import ia • Enable collaboration with Jupyter Notebook • Migration schedule – CASA 6.0 (April 2019) – compatible with CASA 5.5 – CASA 5.6 for Cycle 7 (July 2019) – CASA 6.x & CASA 5.x dual release (January 2020) – CASA 6.x only for Cycle 8 (July 2020) – deprecate 2.7 based CASA 12
CASA Interaction with Users https://casa.nrao.edu • CASA Liaison • CASA Newsletter – twice a year • CASA User Survey – ~100 replies – ~10 from Asia Your feedback is greatly appreciated! 13
