Canada-Indonesia Trade and Private Sector Assistance Project (TPSA) The Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Mandate and Vision The CFIA is mandated to safeguard Canada’s food supply, and the plants and animals upon which safe and high- quality food depends, which enhances the health and well- being of the Canadian people, environment and economy. The CFIA vision is to excel as a science-based regulator, trusted and respected by Canadians and the international community. The CFIA mandate and vision is consistent with the “One Health” concept which encompasses public health, animal health, and environmental health. 9

Canada-Indonesia Trade and Private Sector Assistance Project (TPSA) Canada’s Food Inspection System Stakeholders: Have responsibility for producing and marketing safe food Must have applicable monitoring systems in place (as per various gov’t policies) to show control and ability to produce safe products Have a form of partnership with CFIA as they now partially pay for services through the “cost recovery” mechanism. 14

Canada-Indonesia Trade and Private Sector Assistance Project (TPSA) Safe Food for Canadians Act The Government of Canada is taking action to further strengthen Canada's world-class food safety system. Safe Food for Canadians Act passed in November 2012 set the stage for important changes to Canada's food safety system. The result: better protection for Canadians for food safety. The Safe Food for Canadians Action Plan focuses on continuous improvement based on science, global trends, and best practices. - stronger food safety rules - more effective inspection - a commitment to service - more information for consumers 22
