Strategy 2: Develop distributed leadership roles that allow for collective ownership of the school’s turnaround. Strategy 3: Incorporate workplace-based adult learning experiences that allow staff to build and integrate pathway-specific knowledge and skills. Strategy 4: Build a staff schedule that incorporates professional collaboration and professional learning opportunities across the school. Strategy 5: Collaborate with other Linked Learning schools across the county. 7

Strategy 2: Develop a rigorous academic program that includes advanced coursework and enrichment opportunities. Strategy 3: Partner with institutions of higher education to offer dual enrollment opportunities, allowing students to experience college-level work during high school. Strategy 4: Create a career-related pathway that uses high-quality instruction to integrate academic and career content. Strategy 5: Develop opportunities for industry professionals to teach students in actual work environments. Strategy 6: Implement flexible scheduling options to maximize the unique benefits of pathway opportunities, both in the school and in the community. 9

Strategy 2: Develop and implement a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to promote students’ academic, pathway, and social emotional learning. Strategy 3: Provide comprehensive guidance and skills-building to ensure that students’ high school experiences prepare them for postsecondary college and career options. Strategy 4: Create an advisory structure to coordinate supports across the school, and prepare students for college and career success. Strategy 5: Develop and implement a comprehensive support system that allows ELLs to successfully access and participate in academic and pathway related opportunities. Strategy 6: Develop and implement a comprehensive support system that allows SWDs to successfully access and participate in academic and pathway related opportunities. Strategy 7: Develop and implement targeted supports for over-age and under-credited students. 11
BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Turnaround Practice 3: Student-Specific Supports and Instruction to All Students Excel Key Strategy: Create an advisory structure to coordinate supports across the school, and prepare students for college and career success. A 40-minute daily intervention block to: • Facilitate pathway exploration and planning (College & career readiness) • Develop students’ professional skills • Build social emotional learning and skills • Develop positive relationship with consistent advisor • Provide additional enrichment opportunities 12

Strategy 2: Develop and implement comprehensive strategies to ensure students are on track for graduation, and to re-engage students who have previously disengaged. Strategy 3: Develop pathway-specific expectations and encourage student-to-student accountability. Strategy 4: Collaborate with partners to support turnaround plan strategies. Strategy 5: Enhance opportunities for student leadership, governance, and input. Strategy 6: Collaborate with families and community members to support turnaround plan strategies. 13

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS How will improving Brighton and Excel help close opportunity and achievement gaps? Many high need and traditionally marginalized students are enrolled at Brighton and Excel. • Economically disadvantaged (over 60%, both schools) • Students with disabilities (over 23%, both schools) • English language learners (29.7% at Excel, 41.6% at Brighton) • Students of color (over 90%, both schools) By working to turn around Brighton and Excel, we are working to close opportunity and achievement gaps. 15

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Next Steps: Turnaround Plan Development Process • Initial release of the turnaround plans (June 7th) – Plans are now public, but not yet final – School Committee, local stakeholder groups, Commissioner Chester: opportunity to propose modifications within 30 days (by July 7th) – Brighton LSG (6/22) & Excel LSG (6/26) meetings • Final release of the turnaround plans (by August 7th) – After consideration of any modification proposals from School Committee, LSGs, Commissioner – Final versions of the three-year plans 18
