Biological Relationships I can evaluate the ways in which organisms interact.
Types of Biological Relationships • There are two major types of biological relationships: Predator-Prey Symbiosis
Predation • Predation is a biological relationship where a predator feeds on its prey • This relationship benefits (+) the predator and harms (-) the prey • Prey can include plants eaten by herbivores
• Predator and prey populations directly impact each other • A population is a group of the same species • Population numbers fluctuate (go up and down) in relation to each other
Symbiosis Sym- -bio meaning with life • A biological relationship in which two distinct organisms live together for the benefit of one or both
Types of Symbiosis • The three types of symbiotic relationships are: Mutualism Commensalism Parasitism
Mutualism (+)/(+) • a biological relationship between two organisms in which both benefit ant (+) gets honeydew from aphid aphid (+) is protected from predators
Commensalism (+)/(0) • a biological relationship between two organisms in which one benefits and the other is not affected cattle egret (+) eats insects released by water grazing cattle buffalo (0) not affected
Parasitism (+)/(-) • a biological relationship in which one organism (a parasite) benefits and the other (the host) is harmed cowbird (+) host bird (-) brood parasite must raise is raised by young of a another bird different species, loss of resources
