The Japan 20 joint Beverley and Hornsea Schools trip Previous trips have been exchange visits but due to visa changes this is no longer possible. The link is 20 years old! • Whilst in Japan, all pupils will stay with a host family. You will find this both a challenge and a phenomenally rewarding experience. It is normal to feel apprehensive about staying with strangers, especially as you will find the language difficult. However, the shared bond that you are likely to form can last for many years. • You will need to take school uniform and spend 2 days in Keiai High School. • You will be expected to try new experiences and food. • You should try to communicate in Japanese, even just a little. • You will need to be very aware that we are guests of the school and the host families. • There will be long, activity filled days and the need to travel in Tokyo in very busy conditions. Safety is paramount.
In short, the trip is very demanding but incredibly rewarding. Whilst in Japan, you will travel on the buses and train services on a daily basis. We will arrange SUICA cards to make this easier. We will put £50 pounds on this to begin with. You may need to add more if you are a long way from school. Host families will provide meals but you will have to purchase food and drink during the day. It is essential that pupils are very mature about eating well and keeping hydrated. Staff are not with you for significant amounts of the time. Host families are arranged by KGHS. There is no DBS checking in Japan but we have a long record of outstanding hosts and trust the organising staff implicitly. ( Mrs Ayako Eguchi and Mr Koji Nitta). Travelling to Japan is an arduous journey. People become tired but need to be safety conscious at all times. To help identify pupils we provide a trip hoodie. This way you have a warm layer for travelling and are easily identifiable. You must wear these on the outward and return journey.

Some very important reminders from BHS/ Hornsea School • All schools have an excellent reputation, at home and abroad. • Behaviour must be excellent all week and at all times. • No one is allowed to drink under the age of 18 by law. • No one is allowed to smoke or vape. • Seatbelts to be worn on all journeys. • Don’t lean out of windows in moving vehicles or handle external doors. • Traffic in Japan drive on the left but traffic systems are unfamiliar so always double check. • No inappropriate comments or jokes at the airport (bombs terrorist’s drugs etc….) • Wear the provided hoodies for the journey to Japan and back. • Go everywhere in a minimum of a 3 when travelling and sightseeing.(Buddy system) • Never go anywhere alone. • Be vigilant in crowded places and be safety conscious with strangers. • You will have a significant amount of time with host families away from staff and will need to be mature and vigilant about your own safety. • Carry a mobile phone with you whilst you are out during your free time and have the school mobile number stored in your phone. Ring immediately if there is a problem. • You will likely use public transport and must remain with your hosts, use sensible safety precautions and be aware of others around you. • Always ask a teacher if you can/want to do something. Do not presume it is Ok. • Don’t be late to rendezvous points. • At night make sure all windows are locked.
Eat and drink sensibly all week and particularly on the journey. Puffer fish is off the menu. If you are unwell contact a member of staff immediately Make sure that you bring any personal medication that you might require on the trip and make sure staff know about any medical needs. If you have an inhaler make sure you have it with you at all times. Do not touch wild animals Listen carefully at all times. Have your ID card with you at all times. Help each other out. Be nice. Remember your manners at all times. If something is not right or bothering you ask one of us.
Learning Japanese: The students at the school and, in particular the host, usually have excellent English. This is not always the case though. Invariably, those fluent in English help out and a real team spirit is formed. Strange as it may seem, sometimes having less language means both pupils have a shared experience and form really strong bonds. Respect is extremely important to the Japanese culture. Manners and consideration go along way. A very quick way to gain the respect of your hosts and show then respect is to try to use their language. Japanese are not at all used to visitors speaking Japanese and are often delighted when people make the effort to try. A few useful phrases, please and thank you, yes and no, good morning and excuse me are a good start. If you really want to impress try using Duolingo, Memrise or Japanese for Dummies type books.
