BVA Partners in Physical Education HISTORY OF PARTNERS IN PE:  Various School districts across the country offer some form of adapted physical education opportunities for students with disabilities. General PE setting  General PE setting with paraprofessional assistance and or peer mentor(s)  A separate class with peer mentors – “Partners PE”  A one to one setting with student and PE instructor   Baldwin- Whitehall School District introduced “Partners PE” concept in 2001 and since then have helped other districts throughout the Pittsburgh area integrate the program into their schools. http://www.bwschools.net/BHS/Department/56-special-olympics/1485-Partners-Physical-Education.html *BVA Partners PE Mission : Our number one goal is to use movement, physical activity, and team building as a means to help students gain self-confidence, improve social skills, find activities that they can continue to participate into adulthood and ultimately improve their overall quality of life .

  8. Partner Responsibilities and Feedback about Program : Are We Making a Difference ? How Do I Earn My Grade in Partner’s PE ? -- You will get to participate and help the students learn during many different physical activities. -- Please use positive language and encourage appropriate behavior and/or correct inappropriate student behavior. -- Always sit/be with the student(s), never isolated by yourself in the gym or pool, or socializing only with the other student aides . -- Be honest and ask questions if you need clarification! -- Please be respectful and helpful with all individuals in my classroom, including but not limited to our adult classroom aides and substitute teachers. -- Be a good Belle Vernon student ! Do well in your other classes…make me proud…you’re a role model for my class! -- Be on time .   9. Friends First Club Club Purpose :   The purpose of Friends First is to encourage a mentorship between special education students and their peers. Members will have the opportunity to spend time together enjoying social events, sports training and competitions, or recreational activities in the school and community. We unite with various school districts who have similar programs in their schools and call ourselves S.T.A.R.S (Schools Together with Athletes Reaching Success) Yearly Activities at a Glance :   “You’ve Got a Friend Day” - Twin Lakes Park : Kickstart School year  Bowling Field Trips with BVA Middle/High School - Winter/Spring  Winter Holiday Movie Day (Invite BVA elementary/middle school life skills student)  Spring “Sensory Concert” hosted by Mr. Rozell (invite other districts to attend)  Volunteer Special Olympics each Spring – Norwin High School S.T.A.R.S Field Trips   Elizabeth Forward Football Of Champions  Baldwin-Whitehall Volleyball Tournament  Upper St. Clair Soccer Tournament  Belle Vernon Valentine’s Dance  South Fayette Halloween Dance  Carlynton St. Patrick’s Dance  Life Skills Prom  Cannon MacMillan Team Building Challenge  Miracle League Field Baseball Tournament

Partners Art Established 2012  Mr. Andrew Fecik is the 2 nd Art teacher to participate in this program (2015)  2012- 2014: Partner’s Art was combined with Life Skills Students and the Advanced Art class  2015- Present: Partner’s Art consists of Life Skills students and selected high school students who apply to participate in the Partner’s Art program.

  12. Visual Arts Program: 2015-2016  Adaptations were made to develop an enriched setting for both the life skills students and high school students interested in special needs.  Role of the “ Partner’s ”: high school students interested in pursuing a future career in special needs care/education.  Role of the “ Artists ” are Mrs. Pierce’s life skills students.  Instructor’s role : every class and each week bring new opportunities to further improve each student’s role for the program as I progress in curriculum design for this particular program.
