  7. Background • Beechworth positioned on a unique granite shelf • Stormwater infiltration has caused overflows to the sewer system creating an unacceptable threat to the environment • Re-lining of the town's sewer pipe network has not resolved this issue

  8. A shared challenge • Increase capacity for town growth • Improve our environmental performance – acknowledging the cultural and environmental values of the area • Collaborate with the community to resolve this issue

  9. Our Engagement Goal • North East Water promises to work directly with the Beechworth community throughout the process to ensure your issues and concerns are consistently understood and considered; • North East Water will provide feedback to the Beechworth community on how your input influenced the decision; • The final decision rests with the Board of North East Water.

  10. • 2 preliminary options identified – tank or pipe • Collaborate with the community on these options • Other stakeholders we will be talking to include: – Indigo Shire Council – Parks Victoria – EPA – DELWP – local groups.

  11. Beechworth’s sewer system

  12. Existing Pipeline Route Red line is the boundary of Beechworth Historic Park

  13. Option 1: Storage Tank • Located at back of Church Street Inlet • Provide storage for excess flows until there is sufficient capacity within the sewer system • A minimum 3ML tank would be required (3 Olympic size swimming pools) • Cost estimate $4m

  14. Option 1: Storage Tank

  15. Option 2: Replace pipeline over alternate route a) Partially in the Park - using current pipe down the gorge and along Malakoff Road b) Completely out of the Park – Malakoff Road c) Partially in the Park – Old Chiltern Road using existing track

  16. Option 2a Partially in the Historic Park - using current pipe down the gorge and along Malakoff Road: • Cost estimate $8m to $10m • Approximately 4.5km of pipeline • Impacts Beechworth Historic Park

  17. Option 2a – Partially in the Historic Park – Malakoff Road

  18. Option 2b Completely out of the Historic Park – a new pipeline along Malakoff Road • Cost estimate $15m • Approximately 10km of pipeline • No impact to Historic Park

  19. Option 2b – Completely out of the Historic Park newater.com.au

  20. Option 2c Partially in the Historic Park – route along Old Chiltern Road: • Cost estimate $8 - $10m • Approximately 4km of pipeline • Impacts Beechworth Historic Park
