Badges: Vision • Vision: revolutionize how we incent and recognize learning. Help people open doors and get jobs. • Big gap: traditional credentials don’t work well for skills people need today. • Context: huge wave emerging around badges amongst people working on informal online learning. • Mozilla using for School of Webcraft. MacArthur, Khan Academy, etc. rolling out badges. Significant money and need for tech solutions in this space. • Mozilla can play key role: making badges portable, connecting them into open identity / API-to-me. 4 June 2011 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
Badges: Offering Mozilla’s primary offering is a ‘backpack’ that let’s people gather and re-publish badges across sites. We will also demo end-to- end badge offerings with School of Webcraft and Hackasaurus. 5 June 2011 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
Badges: Offering This is simply a metadata container, set of APIs and verification. Builds on MozLabs ID and web apps work. Demand: MacArthur and others don’t want badges siloed. Originally looked at Facebook as solution. 6 June 2011 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
Badges: Status • Alpha badge backpack plus end-to-end demo planned for deployment on P2PU in July. • Full time product manager plus engineer working on this launch. People from Mozilla Labs identity and web apps teams actively advising. • Possibility of badges innovation competition. Projects would build on our software. • White House Office of Science and Tech / Dept. of Education also want to work with us on badges. 7 June 2011 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
Badges: Plan • Release beta / firm metadata spec by January 2012. • Work with MacArthur partner projects on more end-to-end deployments Q1 - Q3 2012. • This involves: helping badge issuers publish to our system / creating widgets to re-publish to 3rd parties. Also, infrastructure and UX more robust. • Q3 2012(?): encourage wide adoption of ‘backpack’. 8 June 2011 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
Badges: Risks • Biggest risk: getting from concept to product. • MoFo inexperienced at this as a team / haven’t done before. Partly mitigated by strong team lead with educational product experience (Blackboard). • Also: falling out of sync with Mozilla identity and web apps teams. • Strong link to Hanson and Thunder. Good support from Todd (VP Labs). • Worst case: ‘backpack’ software works independently of MozID etc. However, would be a pretty big loss in terms of the overall vision. • General: Moz seen as solution to ‘everything badges’. 9 June 2011 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
Badges: Summary • Badges project helps us advance three goals: SoW adoption, Hacksaurus adoption and open identity. • Also: positions Mozilla as leading innovator in education space, MacArthur deepens partnership. • Next steps: expand team, move into testing mode. 10 June 2011 - Mozilla Foundation Board Slides
